I seem to remember as a very small child that when telephone booths were really booths with doors that one could close for privacy, that there would be a telephone directory in a cover that was chained to the booth to prevent it from walking away.
Am I correct in this memory?
I would really like to find one of those covers with the chain for my phone collection, as I am on the prowl for both an older three slot type payphone as well as an old phone booth that would be close enough to where I live that I might make a day trip or weekend trip to haul it home in.
Any info would be most welcome!
Thanks again!
Joe

I have seen those too, not sure where you will find one these days. It was almost like a 3 ring binder.

Joe I just got back from checking with a guy who owns an old hotel that had one of the old wooden phone booths in it to see if he'd part with it. Sorry to say he already did about a year ago. Those were fairly unique even in the day.

Wooden? Probably black cherry wood polished to a sheen....with an upholstered side bench, a rubber exposed fan blade, and the ringer under the shelf....but most of the later ones did not have a chain...a swivel bracket ....

I couldn't remember the wood they were made of but they were very expensive looking and had the padded bench you mentioned. This one was in mint condition so he probably got plenty for it. Even had the Bell System globe light on top of it.

It is an old mechanical system in a wooden box. Mine is in an oak cabinet. it has a bakelite Front with toggle switches. Mine is a 3 by 10. It has a crank generator in it. Some of the later were painted a flat gray. I'll take a picture of it. They were put into alot of small Motels. It is about 3' long, 2' feet tall and 2' feet wide
