Well, this weekend was the final straw. After nearly 20 years of having the same email address, I realized that over the weekend I got about 300 messages, 240+ of them spam. I now have a new undisclosed address and a public mailbox for all the lists and digests I subscribe to.

It's going to take about 30 days to close off the old account, but it's gonna be sweet.

I have a junk email address that I use wherever I can on the net. Have a timer setup to remind to go in & empty it every month. Helps to keep my business email very clean...

I use gmail for all of my personal accounts, it does tend to dump some legit stuff in spam every once in a while. Same thing with Office 365 at work. Most of the time it's solid though.

My personal email account, and one I use for business, is with wcnet.org I also have a huge fastmail.net account where my files and archives are hosted. The WCnet account is almost 20 years old, I got it in 1994 or 95. In January, I started forwarding my spam messages, sometimes 5 or 6 of the same subject at a time to the ISP and they advised me to get a new email account because the spambots had spambots that were getting me good. Well, it's a PITA to change it, but I'm now ready to separate my business from my personal. Google alerts, ESPN, Chicago Sun-Times, Facebook, Twitter, and the Asterisk digest can go to a throwaway account and I won't be cluttering up my cell phone with that junk.

I have to smile, knowing in 10 days, all that crap that comes in will be gone LOL

I'm not sure how to address the spam problem. As clever as the spam filter coders are, the people sending spam are even more clever. They can adapt within minutes, it seems, to a new filter.

I know a lot of people need to have email alerts sent to their phones, but that's one piece of technology is absolutely do without. I get enough "annoying" service calls (that's a joke for those of you without a sense of humor) now and I don't need an email telling me I should buy Viagra or a time share.
