Rather than send the Telecom Memories topic into a completely unrelated direction, I decided to open a new topic. When I read Dave's (Rather Be Fishing) reference to the NEC Patrician, I immediately though of an old home stereo speaker known as the Electro-Voice Patrician 800. The E-V Patrician was from a time when stereo system speakers were proudly on display out in the open for people to see. The cabinet looked like it was a piece of furniture and was very heavy. Today, Electro-Voice is a pro audio sound equipment supplier. Scans of old documents indicate that Electro-Voice had a factory located at 600 Cecil Street in Buchanan Michigan. A Google Maps image dated 2013 shows the location as an abandoned manufacturing facility in an otherwise residential area. I was surprised to find out that another very large and heavy high-end speaker from that era...the Klipschorn...is still in production.

Some of that old Audio equipment is worth a pile of money still to this day!
I have a friend that builds and fixes guitar/bass amplifiers and its crazy the money in these things. Boutique amps are out of this world priced.
I just snagged an early 60's all in one tube radio and record player a few weeks back that looks like the day it came out of the store!

I remember from my old Stereo Review magazines, there were many discussions about the tube amplifiers vs solid state amplifiers. I doubt that I will spring for Klipshorns though. Too big and much too heavy for me. Despite the negative publicity they have received, I own a pair of Bose 901s and like them.

I still use an old McIntosh tube amp I bought in the 70,s with JBL speakers with oak cabinets and yes they are heavy . System still sounds very good I also bought the optional maple I think cabinets for the mac amp . All this was very pricey for me at the time , my wife had a hissy fit .

I have vague memories of tube testing stations, but, that was a looooong time ago. Could RDT take a few pictures of the equipment and post them?

I remember the tube testers in drug stores. I remember testing a tube from a radio.
My Fisher tube amp is gone. I still have my Marantz, but I'm pretty sure it's solid state.
I also remember x-ray machines in shoe stores to check if the shoes fit. No concern for all that radiation.....
And Dean, that's quite the piece of furniture!
