I've been through this before and always seemed to make it work eventually. But always on my own computers. Making Element Manager work.

I have a customer that does their own speed dial and name changes themselves. They've been using EM on a Windows 7 pc. Service Pack 1, 64 bit. Up to date. In fact, it's the "up to date" part that has caused me a lot of head scratching. Customer apparently did a Java update and now EM gives an error message "Detector 'BCMDetector' cannot determine the device type for [ip]".

I've followed all the suggestions here and other places about getting the correct version of Java and it will work. However, I haven't been lucky enough to get the right version yet.

Is it really just a matter of the right Java for the particular Windows and EM versions? Seems like a needle in a haystack to me at this time.

Thanks.
Jim

In my notes, I have noted Java 6.17 as the one for Element Manager.

I had a job that said Customer cannot access BCM via Element manager.
So I put Java 6.17 on it and it worked OK.

I just do not remember what Windows that computer was running.
But probably not make much difference.

You will need to edit the Java security file

-In Windows Explorer navigate to Program Files/Java/YourVersion#/lib/security
(If using 64 BIT then navigate to Program Files(x86)/Java/YourVersion#/lib/security)
-Right click java.security and open with notepad or alike.
-Use the CTL + F command to start FIND
-Search for MD5 and remove these two references: MD5 and MD5withRSA

You might need to do this if it updates again.

I know this is a month old, but since I'm the OP I hope it's ok. Sorry I wasn't more prompt in responding. Been busy.

I have done the security file edit before and checked that it's still without the mention of MD5. Thanks Curleycord. So the customer's computer is still not able to connect.

In a related development, at the same site, I had to power down to move to a new power source they just had wired in. After the reboot I find my own laptop won't connect remotely thru the vpn. Luckily still able to connect while onsite in the oam port. Only thing I can tell is that I rebooted. No java update on the laptop.

This is odd
If both MD5 and MD5withRSA are not present then install an older version of Java like 1.79
It is possible to run several versions and each one can be enabled or disabled in the console.

Also make sure they are running the latest EM if they are at rls6

Try your laptop on the LAN port to make sure it still works and that the IP address is correct.

I agree with Curely, or just uninstall Java from you PC and re-install Java 8 update 66 or lower.

Figured out my remote connection issue. About the same time I moved the power cord and re-booted, the IT folks were moving another department. Somehow, the BCM's VLAN got sucked into this black hole, which didn't allow the vpn connection to get to the BCM. IT guy found the problem quickly when I pointed out my connection problems. All is good now, for remote connections.

Still working on the onsite pc and java issues. More to follow . . .

Thanks for now.

Update: uninstalled all java from the pc. Installed old version, configured so only that version was active. Looked for MD5 reference, but, strange thing, there is no MD5 mentioned except in the remarks. And I removed all leftover java folders too.

Anyway, it worked! Yesterday. Today they call and same problem again. I looked and there is no new java installed.

I think we are all on thin ice here if this is such a pita problem. Has no one figured out a hack for all of those bcm's out there that we're looking connections to? Too soon to sell the customer a new system.

I just had a BCM the other day. I could not connect to it.
I finally installed Java Version 5.
Connected just fine did all the programming I needed to do.
Then went to do a backup and it would not do a back up.

But I had no problem connecting for normal programming.

It seems to be a PITA only on your clients PC.
Try another PC on site.

You installed an old version only and looked for MD5 which will not be present, that fix is for new versions of java

"configured so only that version was active"
How do you configure java to use only that version if its the only one installed?
That does not make sense....maybe you have corruption if you say you deleted other versions yet you see them listed?

Refresher:
You need to
-Upgrade EM to 62.05
-Upgrade Java
-Remove the 2 MD5 references from the "java security file"

or try:
Install 2 versions of java, one old 1.79 and one new and play with Enable/Disable on both versions.
-Address of sites/BCM's added to Exception List

Right now I have
Win 10/64
Java versions:
1.79 <---- Disabled in Console
1.8.0.121 <---- Enabled in Console
