OK, My TS-22A is a little old... Probably 20 years old but in mint condition. Over the years I have not faithfully replaced the 9v battery...

1. The speaker seems to function when its in the TALK mode but when you change it over to the MONITOR position, the speaker volume will fade and the turn off. So if you want to use the unit, you always need to have it in the talk position which defeats the purpose of the monitor mode.

I have looked at all the posts concerning a 3v lithium battery and if you look at the attached photo, there is a module which I believe is a ringer that is in the battery position. My theory is that is is on top of the the 3v lithium?? And if I change the lithium, everything might start working again? Somehow unglue the ringer and then somehow get the battery replaced.

Can anyone give me some guidance here please?

Thank you!!!!!

I have no idea what the hell that is or why it's there. Methinks there is more wrong with that buttset than you realize. Looks like it's been hacked up for some reason.

Just looks like a piezo ringer glued on top of the disc battery - not a great manufacturing choice, but probably wasn't intended to be repaired.

It does. But have you ever seen a TS22A like that?

Fact remains- if you want to replace the battery, have at it but you are going to have to remove the piezo first.

Thanks Hal! It is definitely the way it came from the manufacturer... I have a small Princess heat gun. I wonder if that will loosen the glue/goo... Yes, I would agree, they really are discouraging me from repairing the unit... "Lets solder some stuff to a circuit board then dip the whole mess in non-conductive goo... And then lets glue some other stuff on top!!" From the fine folks at Harris! LOL

Appreciate the help.. Will post my results after the surgery.

Harris made those things for telcos as throwaways. They would just go and buy more. When they started to sell to the public without changing the design, Harris got in trouble and had to issue credit to anybody who bought one with the "irreplaceable" battery.

That's a conformal coating that's supposed to protect the circuit board from water and moisture because it is used outside. No heat gun, heat won't soften it. I've done a bunch of them. You have to dig it out with an Exacto knife then de-solder the three leads from the battery. Some people have jury rigged a battery holder to make repair easier next time but I say jury rigged because the leads from the holder aren't in the same position as the old battery. I really wouldn't bother and just solder a new battery in since the hard part was done digging the old one out. Easy enough after that to solder a new one in, they don't fail that often if you replace the 9V when it goes dead.

Question is what to do with that piezzo, never saw that before. I would re-locate it somewhere else.
