Dean,

I hear what you are saying. When working in multiple trades for quite a while including up to 480 3 phase when it
came to the NEC code I was up to speed. Never had a issue since following the code was what I did.

Now with "low voltage" again it is rarely an issue since I am following the spec's for what is needed and nothing
is out of the norm. However, this one just threw me a curve ball since the person I am talking to just has this
blank stare and I didn't have the right answer. I guess "bad me".

On the other hand as for learning the NEC/NFPA/BOCA/ADA codes so I can spout off chapter and verse
is NOT likely to happen. The best reason is that in October of this year I will be seventy two (that is 72) years old.

Believe me when I type, that the body and the brain ain't what they use to be and rightly so. I have had my history, and it was good.

Thanks for the input on chapter and verse. You have helped a old man across the street, and it was good.

Good for you Sir! I'm about 10 years behind you.
You profile didn't give a clue as to your level of knowledge, so sometimes I never know if I am dealing with a trunk slammer or not. grin

What I know about High Voltage is "it's above my pay grade."
I do fixtures, receptacles and a branch circuit, but only in my own home.

95% of the Code for low voltage "Communications" the inspectors only look for grounding and bonding, cable type
and support, and high requirements of 18" to center and ADA requirements.

Dean,

I saw a trunk slammer about a month ago or so along a local city street stuffing his trunk. I wanted to
stop and slap him around a bit but decided that I could not get my work done from a Jail. devil

I don' t boast my experiences much, especially on line. However...............
Such as 22 years in the plastic industry, 14 of those as a Maintenance Supervisor,
with 3 buildings and equipment to maintain. As well as actually design, engineer, and
build downstream production equipment that actually doubled production.

I started an Alarm Dealer Business that I have been running for almost 29 years.
As a contractor I have done a multitude of various trade functions by request of customers.
From a new total electrical build out of a small trucking company and shop, which also
included the fire, security, telephone, network to the install of a residential water heater where
I guaranteed the owner that he would never see the plumbers crack. bananaheadbanger

Gotta stop, too much history.

I hope the next 10 years go well for you Dean. As word of warning!! I got new knees about 6 years
ago. The Dr. didn't tell me that I would not want to get down on my knees after the surgery ----- ever.
If you have to deal with that issue in your future, be sure to ask the surgeon to make the incision
in such a way as to go around the knee cap not directly over the knee cap. I will make a huge
difference in your future after the new knees. Sadly, I can't go back and get it fixed.

Ok, I am done. stop I certainly typed more that I should have. Hope it was not boring................

Have a good holiday weekend. Be sure to kiss a vet.

Later,

Les

Kissing myself as I type.

Lots of $$$ can be made in Fire Alarm work. Run the cable, hang the devices and program the system.
THEN monitor the system through a third-party and collect the monthly revenue and of course there is
the required yearly inspection: easy money! Can you imaging if a telephone required a yearly inspection
of every device and programming?

Knee surgery was back in 1976 (side-cut). It's important to take care of the shoulder also!
Stay healthy my friend.

For LV work you only have to know the applicable parts of NEC Art. 725 then 800 on up that applies to your work. That's maybe less than 10 pages of material. Anything before 725 does not apply unless someplace in that 725 and 800 on up refers you back to a specific Article. This is why clearances around LV equipment aren't applicable like they are for electrical equipment. There is a lot of the NEC that is poorly written, ambiguous or just not enforceable. For instance, there is nothing to stop you from putting a patch panel and switch or a KSU above a hung ceiling as long as it isn't a return-air space- or even behind that refrigerator. Stupid, yes. Would I even be a part of it? Absolutely not. And the inspector really has nothing to say about it.

This customer wouldn't be a woman would it? devil

By the way, you've got me beat by two months. I'll be 72 in August you youngster.

Hal, when have you ever read an installation manual that recommends installing above a ceiling grid...that is a code violation:

110.3(B) Installation and Use. Listed or labelled equipment shall be installed and
use in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling.

And are you saying that Grounding and Bonding aren't applicable to low voltage communications?
