I have a customer with a NEC SV9100 (School) with 100 Pair outside cable between two building with lightning protection on both ends its been there probably from the beginning They are both grounded looks like the same modules on each end
489BCB1-100 Comcode 107895112 Lucent Technologies

There has been (2) separate incidents (1) this year which blew out (2) digital station cards and (1) last year that blew out (1) digital station card


They also had some data equipment that got hit as well (Last Year)


I notice that the NEC cabinets are not grounded so I was going to do that I just wondering if the right lightning protection is installed since its been their for a while

Just to make sure, the cards that were blown out had stations on the feed cable?

Be sure to test your grounding points, otherwise it's not grounded.

What kind of protectors - Carbon or Gas?

If they're gas they S H O U L D protect digital equipment. If they're carbon, they're only good for analog.

Get an electrician to test the grounds with a megger. They need to be less than 25 ohms to ground for those protectors to work. I would expect No. 6 or better wire for a 100 pair cable

What color are the protectors? There should be black, red or blue things plugged into the lucent terminals you listed, and a big fat ground wire coming out of htem.
