Using an Axxess 11 system. Recently I added an IP station. I could dial the number 'internally' but not from the AA menu. Finally I added a voice mailbox to the station and it worked. Why is that, this station doesn't need a voicemail box.
Say Bye.

If you don't need a mailbox, delete it and create an Extension ID instead. Without one or the other, you can't dial the station from the auto attendant.

Is that the same as extension list? It's in one of those at the bottom but it's after the CRA's in the list.

No, an extension list is under System / Devices and Feature Code. Extension IDs are under Voice Processor / Devices.
An extension ID is used to allow the dialing of a device from a voice mail application if there is no mailbox present - exactly what you wanted to do. Without a mailbox or extension ID, the voice processor doesn't know that the device exists and you won't be able to dial it from an application.
Extension IDs are also used to eliminate the "Please hold while your call is transferred to ..." announcement, when using digit translations. You would create the ID, then disable the auto attendant transfer prompt.
