So I was getting ready to pull some cable at a client's house and it has a conduit ran just where I need it. I pull the cover off of the LB and what do I see? Some nice person filled the conduit full of foam. So far it appears to go down one of them at least 18 inches, maybe more. Both ends are the same too. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/VRqyLZtl.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/rTrqiecl.jpg)

People seem to think that they're doing something like this to save energy. As if cutting down on drafts. There's really no valid reason for doing this, but for some reason, they think that they're the only person who will ever use a conduit. I agree that it makes no sense at all.

The idiot who owned the house before me did something similar to the outlet and switch boxes on the exterior walls. So hurray for me when I have to replace a light switch.

If it's an underground conduit it could be stopping water. But then you're not supposed to just pour foam down the conduit, it should just be a little cap on top so you can pop it off.

So, I ended up cutting out about 2 feet of the conduit and it looks like the foam went about 12 inches into it. I love multitools for things like this and I didn't even nick the cable too. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/hRKIYAsl.jpg)

Well the energy codes do require sealing for leaks and it is a good idea for pipes to be sealed to alleviate issues such as humidity condensing inside the raceway and building up water in the pipe. As well as keeping bugs out. But spray foam is not the one to useThere is a permagum called duct seal that is like a chunk of playdough the will seal the pipe fine and it never hardens much. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Gardner-Bender-1-lb-Plug-Duct-Seal-Compound-DS-110/100212441

I know how that goes I was a electrical contractor for many years and heard the same. EVERY DAMN TIME I TOLD THEM THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO CODE. But pull a permit and see what happens to him.

Why use something (duct seal) that is specifically designed to do the job, (and which has been around for 100 years) when you can have fun using something out a spray can and screw it up for all who follow?
