we used to have a local test number that resulted in a simple silent termination for testing noise conditions. are there currently any of these numbers still available?

I know it's not the same, but could you call someone and have them mute the call?

Called "quiet battery" or "short subscriber line". There were also a host of other tests like tones on T and or R, T or R short to ground, open subscriber line, audio monitor, stay connected after disconnect.
Haven't seen a DATU number in many years.

If I remember correctly, when you dialed the "quiet line" number in our GTD5 office you would first hear a busy signal for a while, then it would terminate to the quiet line for your measurements. I was told that was in case someone accidentally dialed the number. They didn't want a customer to get connected to the quiet line so they sent busy tone to get them to hang up and redial.
I'll have to find the number and try it out to see if it still works that way.

Yes, I remember here it would give you a tone for maybe 10 seconds then go quiet.

In AT&T California each local exchange has xxx-0020 for the Milliwatt Test Tone, xxx-0049 for the Quiet Termination. You will hear about 5 seconds of Milliwatt Tone before going quiet.

In Massachusetts/Verizon Core territory, (xxx) xxx-9931/9935 would reach either a milliwatt, or, a silent line.

Sam The whole point of the milliwatt tone is to check line loss. So it needs to come from your CO @ 0.0db. If it comes from a foreign CO you are going to have additional unknown losses so you can't perform a valid test. -Hal
