While looking up the address of the Verizon Central Office that houses the company's packet switch for eastern Massachusetts, I stumbled upon a website that has pictures of Bell System Central Office buildings.

Not sure if people were aware of it. The listings are broken down by area codes.

Memory lane.
I used to do all the HVAC control systems in all those places in Florida when it was GTE.

Having spent time in those buildings, do you still remember how they looked? I think those offices are now Verizon? ponder

Yes they are, at least the very large ones.
There is no signage on the smaller locations.

What I remember most were the cable trays were 4 foot high in cables.
Whenever they had a problem with a cable they would just add another one and abandon the bad one in place.

The practice of leaving cables in place is common inside COs. At the Global Crossing office, we did remove cables when possible. Level(3)'s policy was to disconnect and just leave cables & fibers alone. The trays were loaded up. bugeyed

All I can say is when I walked under the damn things I was worried that the cable trays would collapse and fall.

But I understand the dilemma of how the hell do you get it out if it is buried under a few hundred cables.

Back in 2002 I had a gig where I had jobs in every Class 5 CO in NYC (just about 100 locations).

I was the foreman, so while I didn't work in all of the offices, I did survey them all. It was a rush. There was essentially a CO in every NYC neighborhood. There were some neighborhoods I had never been in in my life. And why would I? They were all residential - and if I didn't know anybody who lived there - there was no reason for me to be there. It was one of the more interesting jobs I had in my 45 year career in the phone business.
