I need some help please...

I have been using my ASA on my Definity G3si v11 for a couple of years now. My ASA is 1.11.8

Since December 2004, I have had trouble getting into the ASA. I have dialtone on my line, I have a working modem for dialup. I dial in and the screen goes to give me a Login: prompt and I get a variety of numbers, letters and symbols that come up. No matter what I try to type, these rows of jibberish keep running and I cannot get in.

It seems like I have noise on the line. I am working in an office above a manufacturing area but nothing new is in the building. Avaya says it's internal but we've changed out all wires and cables and still no resolution. I've checked all over the company and no new equipment or higher voltage things are running. There is nothing different in the building that I can find.

My login looks like this all of the time.

Login: %$RD$(8F5Ds5^&*hj87*y*Yb 8Y*&BY Z8iYB* *BYz8&ZB *(&ZB9*&NHZ89Zyb&^zt*&YZ98n )(NH&87^&89N&U*N(&*(*(z

Then suddenly, once in a while I can get in with a normal login prompt and all is well and I can use the ASA. Also at times I am in and then I lock up and cannot get around in it and have to drop ASA and the line.

I'm at a standstill, does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone delt with this before?

If your system is R9.5+ you should be connecting IP. Your problem is modem speed. If you are using dialup change your modem properties in your PC control panel to 9600bps and disable flow control and compression. If you are using a data-mod thru the net-cons try a different data module. Why are you not using IP?

Thanks gkar for your feedback.

I checked and I am at 9600bps. We are not an ip office yet so that is not an option anytime soon. Also, I cannot connect directly by cable as my ASA and I are too far away from the switch room.

Avaya has changed the port. We've changed the modem, changed all cables and so on. There are very few times but I can get onto ASA maybe once every couple of days. I dialup on a DID lines so I cannot have a potts line scrubbed. Am stuck in mud as to what is happening.

I've seen somewhat of the same problem when I was trying to dial into one of my remote Prologic systems running v11. I was able to solve the problem by trying diffrent combos of stop bits and speeds. No idea if this will help but it was able to work for me. [Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]

You should add a CLAN board. You said DID, if its T-1 service I have seen the sync not set in the switch cause similar problems. Try a different brand modem. Did you disable flow control?

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I got Avaya back in the building and they found my ASA to be corrupt. A new copy fixed me right up.
