I'm a newbie and need help setting Automatic Line Selection for a fax extension, so our fax machine only selects the fax line when dialing out.

I have a new Partner ACS 7 system, made ext 13 the fax extension, am setting up a single fax machine. I used #207: Pool Line Assignment to remove the fax line from main - and only - pool, then #301: Line Assignment to assign only line 5 to ext 13.

The next step in Avaya's manual says to "Set Automatic Line Selection for extension X to select line A only."

After following the instructions for Automatic Line Selection on page 5-3, and pressing ** when programming that extension in Centralized Telephone Programming mode (from ext 11 on an 18D phone), I'm not sure what buttons to press next.

I simply want ext 13 to use line 5 - only - when placing calls.

Any help will be appreciated!
Bart

If you only have line 5 assigned to the fax machine extension how's it gonna dial out on any other line?

Don't believe everything you read. :nono:

I only want it to dial out on that line. When sending a fax, it can't answer an incoming fax, so it would be better to tie up the fax line until finished.

Since my posting, I got the setup to work right, so "problem solved."

There will be others, though...

Thank you!

I was being sarcastic and trying to get you to think a little bit. My point was that there is no need to do auto line selection because you only have one line assigned to that extension. The fax is naturally only going to dial out on that line and pick it up when it rings.

I have a better idea. How about the fax line goes straight to the fax machine without going through the system?

That "running your fax line through the system" propaganda that AT&T (now at&t!) pushed when the Partner systems came out was such a joke.

Everyone knows that a fax line is just that; a fax line. Unless it's a two-line operation (one voice, one fax, as in home office), why in the world would anyone route the fax line in and then right back out of the system?

It's simple. AT&T figured out a way to market more CO line and station ports when they introduced the original Partner. Their concept stuck, through their numerous name changes.

Bart indicated that his problem appears to be solved, but I assume he just got the programming right. Moving a jumper away from the system and directly to the fax jack was the real solution.

"running your fax line through the system"

I agree with Ed. What's the point?

Yeah, I was going to suggest that too but I assume they want to use the idle fax line to dial out on when the others are in use.

If that's not the case why bother running the fax line through the system?

My friend you'll get more familiar it as you keep at it.Try not to get caught up in redundant programming. If there is na simpler way to get what the client wants, do it.

For small companys that don't have a huge amount of fax traffic.

Running there fax line into the phone system can give them another line of communication if all the rest of there vioce lines are busy.

We do want the fax to be run through the system so that line can also be used for outgoing voice calls when idle. However, our main reason for not bypassing the system is so we can easily transfer calls to the fax machine. Our customers sometimes try sending faxes to our voice line - at it tries three times, of course!

In the past, we would put them on hold, dial the fax line, then conference the calls and mute until the fax is finished. But that requires an open line and quick thinking. Transfering wil be much easier.
