I have a few 8434DX phones in a call center on a Definity system. For some reason a few of the phones the display will turn off after two seconds or so rather than staying off. The menu also does not work when the menu button is pressed.

It tests fine and the display works - it just turns off on its own. How do I change this to always stay on? Thanks in advance for your help.

I'll start by asking a few questions:
Is there a power transformer on the phone?
Is there a Headset that uses the adjunct port of the phone?
If the above answers are yes, then try unplugging the headset and see what happens. It the transformer is not big enough it may kill the display.
Let me back up and ask more detail about the problem, what exactly does the display do? display incomming calls? Time/day? etc.

Hi DayTech,

This phone is on an independent power supply and not on our shared system power supply. When I hold the test button it stays on for the entire time I hold it. There is no headset.

I displayes everything normally, but it just turns off after a second or two. When I press the menu button nothing comes up on the display at all.

I have tried switching phones and it behaves the same. Some phones do this and others do not.

Are you sure the phone is programmed as and 8434D? Also have you tried replacing the power supply? Pins 7 and 8 should be for power and you need to be using 8 strand wire with RJ45 plugs.

Yes. Also, it is plugged directly into an independent avaya power supply under the desk and not our shared power supply, so there is no chance the wires are wrong since they are all patch cables.

If the display stays lit while pressing the test button, the I'd say that the transformer is probably not the problem.
I have had users leave the menu up on the display so that they can press the Time/day button to check the date, then when a call comes in, it only displays the caller id info for one ring then reverts back the the menu. When that happens though the menu is still displayed.
What happens when a call comes in? Does the caller ID info display?
Try pressing the exit button. Maybee the menu is on, but there are no soft buttons assigned.

Todd

Couple of things, Make sure the system feature settings is for "System Updates Time On Station Displays? y" then the phones need to be on a two wire station card not a TN754. Add a time button to a feature button not a display button. Push the button to turn on the time then remove or move the button back to the display. Hope that helps.
