I am familar with some of the avaya systems but not the Merlin Legend. Does anyone know how many wires are required for an MLX phone. (I wonder this because on a partner system for a phone propiotary phone must have 4 wires to work but the ksu provides an 8 wire jack and the Merlin Legend provides an 8 wire jack but i dont have the system yet and im trying to wire accordingly)
Thanks, Daniel

I believe that MLX phones use 2 pairs. The reason that Partner modules have 4 pair jacks is/was so people can/could upgrade from Classic Merlin systems to the Partner without having to run new cables. [Edited after I saw Mike gave the correct answer]

Daniel, Please be more detailed with your profile. But the MLX's need 2-pair unless you have a DSS hooked up to that phone. If you have a DSS then it would be 3-pair.

An MFM in a MLX phone would also require the 4th pair, But MFM's are Rare. The MLX20L would also require the 4th pair

MLX 20 only needs the fourth pair to work if you want the DSS/BLF to function.

Barring an MFM or MLX-20L installation, you can "get away" with only the center two pair...just like the Partner system phones.

OK, now for the REST OF THE STORY...
An MLX set will actually work on 1 & 1/2 Pairs.
WHAT? you say?
Yes, but it will not pass SELF TEST:
Intercom - Speaker - * (STAR) 00 (Zero Zero).
If you do not have at least the BASIC 2 PAIRS needed, when you do self test, you will get:
SNAP, CRACKLE, POP and A BIG BUNCH of STATIC.
