The company I work for was recently acquired by another company. They would like to install an Avaya S8500 to replace the NEC system we have. I was looking around to see what the features are and just to learn some background on the system. I have not really found a lot and was wondering if the S8500 is part of Definity, Majix, Legend or one of the other Avaya platforms.

More or less. Definity is long gone and has been replaced by the communication manager line. The S8500 is a server that handles your call processing. Look here for more information https://support.avaya.com/japple/css/japple?PAGE=Product&temp.productID=156186 If you looking for any type of redundancy, check out the S8720 or S8730.
