Anyone use them? Good, bad?

If I recall correctly, Rochester (NY) is served by an independent LEC that was originally named Rochester Tel. They changed their name to Frontier Communications about 15 years ago. They had a long distance subsidiary, also under the Frontier name. This company either merged with or became Global Crossing.

There was a pretty nasty bankruptcy with the company about six years ago which resulted in customers being left with no service. I only know of one customer in Long Island, NY that was using them as a CLEC and ended up having to change their local numbers and everything, because the whole thing was tied up in court. From what I heard, the company's assets (customer base included) couldn't be touched by anyone, to include number porting, until the disposition of the bankruptcy. At the time, this thing was big news, similar to the Enron-type situation and I think people went to jail over it.

I didn't realize that GC was still around.

That's what I was thinking. That they went belly up a few years ago.

I knew a guy that used to work for them. And he was out of a job overnight.

Ok, since many of the people on this board have mentioned their backgrounds, this looks like the best time to reveal a little bit about myself.

Actually you all do know a Global Crossing employee...... ::points to self:: laugh

I started back in 1990 with Allnet Communication Services installing Teltronics Netmanagers at customer locations for about a year, but after Intra-lata dial around service (1010xxx) died off, I started to work on the switch, a DSC DEX-400, then a 600 and lastly a 600E (that's where my screen name comes from), Tellabs DCS equipment, echo cancellers and other stuff.

I survived the Allnet/Frontier Communications merger and then the Frontier/Global Crossing merger.

The company is well out of bankruptcy and customers that have stuck with us, as well as those added since are generally pleased.

As a technician, I take a proactive approach to my work. Imagine calling a customer to let them know that you see a problem with their circuit long before they are aware that a problem exists! smile

I also thought they were long gone.

Dex why hide your true self for so long?

It's guys like you and Anthony that will be changing the face of the company "profile" for the better. With that said there are only a few LEC and CLEC people on the board and I don't want to miss any of them. So to those I missed (you know who you are) just the the shear fact that you are here helping people and techs like us means a great deal. The ugly face of the giants will hopefully be made over by good, knowledgable and well intentioned people like you.

Ok enough KAing

Richard are you considering using them or ???

My reluctance to create a post about myself comes from a few things.

These forums are geared primarily towards CPE installers, not so much C.O. techs. I know enough about the Partner ACS to give general/entry level advice, but that's about it. shocked

If I see a post in the T1/CSU forum that I can answer, I'll chime in. But being a C.O tech in the land of CPE installers sometimes has me feeling like a fish out of water. frown

The other reason is that I am more of a private person who is uncomfortable talking myself up. I like to help make other people look good, and then just fade off into the background with no fanfare (think "Wind Beneath My Wings").

No kidding, Waine. We need more C.O. switch technicians around here. Anthony H has bailed me out a few times on LEC and CLEC programming issues. He gave me the ammunition I needed to educate the people in the business office as to what was supposed to be happening.

Dex, you are more than welcome here. I think you will find a lot of respect and you also be talking up a storm about your craft in no time. At least now that we know you are here.

Same here,........I am very happy we have CO techs among us.

I agree! It's nice to know that there are still a few people at "the phone company" that care about their craft!

Dex I felt the same way when I first started posting here, but quickly found out that this is one incredibly knowledgeable, helpful group, they appreciate each others strong points and help each other how ever they can. And at least now I know I have a little back up if the dogs turn on me ...lol

Just wanted to add, I use GC for all of my LD. I port all 1+ traffic out 2 T1's straight to their switches. Been using them for about 3 years now. Never had any problems and getting decent rates. The customer service is excellent, and the billing statements are easy to understand. Took a bit of time to get all the sub accounts worked out, as we have 26 different sub accounts under the main that are billed back to our subs.

Nothing but good experiences here.

I was contacted by a salesman about our voice and data circuits. I just remember them being in all kinds of trouble. Looks like that might be cleared up now. I'm not too terribly interested as I doubt they have any physical presence in this area. Our current vendors do.
I use Deltacom for local and LD, Verizon Business for Internet, and BellSouth for local data circuits.

Changing carriers is sucha a pain in the buttset.

Richard
