Telephone service and the quality of it is regulated by the govt. Every state has a Public Service or Public Utility Commission that verifies compliance with the company's charter on file with the commission that had permitted the utility their govenrment sanctioned monopoly.

VoIP is not covered under the same umbrella. Your internet service is a consumer product, not a government regulated utility.

And your point would be, I suppose, that once they figure they have enough clients (suckers) on board, the rates will go through the roof?

Net Neutrality is the government attempting to regulate the internet.

They are also debating on regulating VoIP.

They will regulate anything that get's 'em a paycheck smile

DSL and anything other than a basic 1FR residential line have been completely deregulated in many areas already.
