Does anyone know of an inexpensive,(that being a relative term) sniffer/tester to plug into a CO to determine the presence of DSL service? I am looking for something small and simple that I can hand out to my techs.

In the past week I have had several arguments with the local Bell over DSL service actually being on the line.

Thanks in advance.

why not buy some sort of cheapo dsl modem and just plug it in. most will show that the dsl is up via a led or something

Harris has some nice buttsets that will test DSL.
Here is a good site for testers: https://www.buytester.com/butt_sets/index.asp

Good Luck!!

Chris, I have tried that and the "All Knowing" Bell Tech, told me that my modem was bad, not compatable, etc.

JJ, All of the buttsets that I have seen will allow testing of tone on a line with DSL but won't allow testing of DSL presence.

Thanks to both for your replys though.

I know there is a tester out there, I just can't find it.

If you really want "inexpensive" you'll have to go with the modem like chrislebeck mentioned. If you know it works at one location, it should work at another. Of course you'd have to configure it.

the drawback to modems is they are not all universal. It depends on the circuit. For example, Qwest will install a DSL and provide you with an actiontec modem. The actiontec seems to be hit or miss on other DSL providers. Want to provide your own Cisco modem? Better use a Cisco 785 modem, because the Cisco 765 won't work on a Qwest DSL, but will on XO.
If you will be testing alot of DSL circuits, they only way to go is to get a Harris DSL tester.
