Hi everyone. We finally landed a job with a big builder of high end homes here in our small community of 17,000 doing structured cabling. We started our own business 7 months ago after working for a guy who has done this for 17 years. He currently does not have a contractors license so we didn't know we needed one. No problem, we are enrolled at the end of january for the test, but until then we need to start on this builders new model home in 2 weeks. We have explained this to them, they have installed our demo structured wiring box, and are talking to two guys with the licenses we need so that we can work under them. We have worked with one of the guys many times, but wonder, what is a fair deal to make with them to work month to month. We are even considering working our a business agreement with them, but...please, your valuable knowledge would be so greatly appreciated! Thank you everyone on this fantastic help page!!!

rules vary from State to State, but typically you do not need a contractors license to install structured or low voltage cabling. At a minimum, you would need the proper insurance and bonding to protect yourself on the job.

Some states require a low voltage certification, some actually require an Electrician's license. Z-man is right at the minimum you will need liability and workman's comp, some areas also require a continuing performance bond. Unfortunately most need to be paid in full upfront whci makes it very difficult for startups with limited funding. Depending on the size of the contract you may have to work with your "associates" through the first job then get yourself squared away, make sure you stay on top of your paperwork particularly change orders
