Greetings everyone,

We have a NEC 192 (S8000) in our business here. Recently, one of our people had enquired about getting an IP phone that would give him some options and/or mobility.

Has anyone here got any past experience with IP telephony, particularly with the NEC 192 product? I came across some docs that says S8500 starts to support the IP Station (MEGACO) with the IAD(8)-U10 ETU and IP-R(IPK) units.

Please post your experience and/or recommendations with this type of VOIP application here. I am intrigued if this would be a good option for us.

Thanks.
We used an IP card in our Electra Elite IPK but got rid of it in favor of a couple of external IP modules that translate the normal digital lines to IP and then send it over the network and translate them back on the other side. The internal card had issues. We had an NEC tech out here from Texas troubleshooting and he concluded that there was a design flaw in the cards for the IPK. Not sure about the 192 though. Basically the problems we were having were dropped calls and horrible QoS.

I am sorry to hear that the IPK IP card didn't work out for you. I think it's going to be the same card/solution for the 192. Was it the Megaco/IAD card route that you had problems with? I am hoping that I can try out an existing installation of the equipment before plunging in with both feet. It's pretty expensive experiment, if it turns out that the combination doesn't work.

BTW: How's your 3rd party solution going? Please provide additional info. Thanks.
It's not really a 3rd party solution. The Equipment is still NEC. We use a "Dterm IP Gateway II" on the PBX side, and something similar on the other end. I don't feel like going over to the other building to check out exactly what we have there, but there's two similar boxes over there.

I'm not sure what we had before. All I can remember is it was supposed to be the optimal solution for the IPK. I believe we used DTH IP phones, not sure though. We had an NEC tech fly out from Texas and he concluded that there was a design flaw. They came out with a patch for the card as well, but we just went the other route. That was in the end of June beginning of July '04. It may be good now. I'm going to try to find out what we used though and let you know.

Everything seems to be working right now though. I was on vacation when they did the install so I don't know the details of the installation they did, but everything works. The sound quality is great. No dropped calls.

I like the current setup better for another reason as well. This allows me to distribute extensions better because I'm not limited to the ports available on the IP card. We needed two more extensions over in the other building but the IP card was full and we didn't have room for another one. This way though, it doesn't matter what card the ports are from. I had a couple of unused ports on another digital card that I could now assign to phones in the other building without having to buy another card.
