I am trying to configure an NEC Aspire VoIP system and I can't seem to get it to work.

I plugged a 4 channel VoIP gateway card in and configured it for 192.168.1.20 and then set up a DHCP server to give out addresses of 192.168.1.21 to 25. We normally use static addresses, but I can't get to the config screen on the phone. With the DHCP set up at least it grabs the 21 address (I can ping it), but now it gets stuck on the DRSC(1st) Connecting screen.

I have tried to press Hold, Conf, *, # to access the config on the phone, but it doesn't do anything.

Anyone have experience with this?

On a side note, the phone is a used one that was in place at another site. Is it possible it is looking for the old connections? Any way to "reset" the phone?

Also, I have tried to ping the VoIP address (20) and it doesn't respond. Should it? I have plugged in different cables and tested them with other devices. The lights on the switch come on like it is working normally.

Thanks,
Fred

Do you have the CPU address set to the 192.168 range? The CPU must have a static address.

Yes, I set the CPU to 192.168.1.10 and I log into it over the web page to configure it.

Have you gone through the VOIP manual and setup guide and flowchart? Contacted NEC tech support? The flowchart is usually well done.

I have 0893100 (rev 4) and 089300 (rev 2). It is very vague. Where is the flowchart?

This is what I have:
Programming - VoIP
These programs are always required with the VoIP feature. Refer to the following feature options
for additional programming.
âž»
10-12-01 : NTCPU Network Setup - IP Address
Select the IP address for the IP connection (default: 172.16.0.10). A static IP address is
required by the NTCPU. The system must be reset in order for the change to take effect.
âž»
10-12-02 : NTCPU Network Setup - Subnet Mask
Select the Subnet Mask to be used by the IP server (default: 255.255.0.0).
âž»
10-12-03 : NTCPU Network Setup - Default Gateway
If required, select the default gateway IP address to be used when using a router
(default: 0.0.0.0).

Programming - Static IP Address
In addition to the system programming for the NTCPU or VOIPU PCB, the IP phone also has
options which must be programmed from the phone itself. Be sure to set both the system and phone
options.
âž»
10-13-01 : In-DHCP Server Setup - DHCP Server Mode
Disable (0) the system’s ability to use the built-in DHCP server.
âž»
84-04-01 : VOIPU PCB DHCP Server Mode Setup
Disable (0) the use of DHCP for the VOIPU PCB.
âž»
84-05-01 : VOIPU IP Address Setup - IP Address
For each VOIPU PCB, enter the IP address for the VOIPU PCB (default: slot 1=173.16.0.20,
slot 2 = 172.16.0.21, etc). The IP address should be increased according to the number of
VOIPU PCBs. This entry becomes invalid if Program 84-04 is set to "1" (DHCP enabled).
âž»
84-06-01 : VOIPU Setup - RTP Port Number
For each VOIPU PCB, enter the RTP port number (default 10020).

Programming - Aspire IP Keyset or Aspire Keyset with IP Adapter, Static IP Address
Setting the IP Address on an Aspire IP or Legacy IP Keyset Using a Static IP Address
1. On the Aspire IP keyset, enter the phone’s program mode by pressing HOLD CONF * #.
This enters the IP User Menu program mode to select the settings for the individual
phone.
To enter the phone’s program mode, the display must show the time, error, or “Connecting”
message prior to pressing HOLD CONF * #.

And then the rest with the phone. When I press HOLD CONF * # it does not take me into the phone config.

Have you tried more than one IP phone? Also have you tried doing this why the phone is unplugged from the network?

What model IP phone do you have?

The Dterm IP phone for the IPK uses HOLD CONF *# to log in.

Does the Aspire IP phone use the same log in to config?

Someone on this board will know.

Okay, a little info...

I finally got into the config. You have to slowly press hold then conf then * then # separately, I was originally trying to press them at the same time. Even doing it quickly will not work. You have to do it pretty slow.

Anyway, the DRS message has to do with the NTCPU. You have to set the DRS to the address of your main system (192.168.1.10).

Now, when plugged in at the office I did get the phone to finally register and come up. Now I am at a remote location trying to get the same phone to register across a network. I have opened up all of the ports (all ports) to the specific IP the phone is registered at and we use NAT translation from the global IP to the phone system.

I can't get it to come up now.

Sorry for the noise, but anyone have info from here?

Obviously I'll keep plugging away. I can't believe the first thing as simple as logging into the phone seemed to be so difficult.

Oh, yes, the phone is an Aspire IP phone (not adaptor).

Are you on a VPN? That is the only thing they support.

As CT said above, you must use a VPN between locations, this is the only way NEC field engineering says to do it.

Hello all, newbie here on this fourms. I'm eargerly waiting to hear the outcome of this topic, I'm also in the same boat as Fred. The NEC rep we are working with is stumped and he is 2nd level support tech. So I am at the mercy of NEC getting back to me.

FYI
NEC engineering will help you get the IP phone working straight into the IP card. They will recommend what equipment to use between the IP phone and the phone system after that they are done.It is up to the end user IT dept to make things work from there.(There are so many variables for fire walls and other security measures out there it would be impossible for NEC to know them all).
Tip and Ring is right you have to use VPN.

I wish I could be more help
