I've been asked to do an emergency PRI install because a CLEC salesman sold a PRI line to a company with no PRI interface. First question, do NEC PRI cards require activation codes or other license procedures or do they work out of the box. Second, having nmever done a PRI on an NEC what exactly will be required to program this? I've done Nortel and Avaya but never an NEC.

Since you're a tech I'll give you some program info, but mods here may delete/edit....

First, If you have a basic package 48 port system you can only install a 16 channel PRI (48 port package is 16 trunks by 32 stations max). You will need to assign your PRI card as a PRI 16 in prog 7-1.

To check the package type: press [feature] then 3 on any display set. It will display as 48p or 192p, hope for 192p...

If the system has CO cards you will need to delete them to add the PRI.

If this is an IPK you need a PRT U 20 card, a PRT U10 will only work in a E192 with OLD software.

Also, if the system software is 1.x you will have to put the PRI in slot 1 or 4, no matter how many channels. 2.x or higher it won't matter.

NEC only supports the D channel on channel 24. If the carrier has it on any other channel = no workie.

You will also need a CLK-G card to put on the CPU. If you don't have one the span will work but it will have many issues with disconnects/clicking sounds. Don't bother doing it without the CLK-G card, it's a $30 part. The CLK-G installs on the cpu, you will need to power the system off and remove the CPU to install it.
Make sure the battery n the CPU is connected before powering down. otherwise you lose ALL programming = frown

You need a manual!
Here's the steps:

prog - 7-1 delete COI cards / assign PRT card to slot
prog - 1-13-xx assign your span type (esf/b8zs) and how many channels.

Prog - 3-14 assign trunk type as WINK
Prog - 3-91 assing trunk type as DID

Prog - 1-1-20/21/22 assign DID/DNIS info

Prog - 4-12 put CAP keys on the phones. You cannot have CO line appearances with a PRI.

Prog 1-1-31 assign master clock source (cabinet and slot number-typically 1-1).

Your ISDN type (NI, NI2, 5ESS, etc...) is set by the 4 yellow dip switches on the front of the PRT card.

With a manual this will make sense, without one.... Get an NEC tech and save the headache.

I've probably said too much already...

No, not at all. I grok most of that. How would the battery be disconnected on the CPU?

There's a small 2-pin connector and a small wire on the main board. This goes to a small battery. It does the same function as a CMOS battery on a PC.
