For most of my career I've installed Nortel small key systems. With the recent change to Avaya, and a suggestion from a friend, I started using the NEC DSX 40 and 80 models.

I understand the DSX is being replaced with the SL1100. Is this the path to follow? How does the SL1100 compare for installation and programming? Is there a certification like the DSX?

Thanks.
Jim

The SL1100 is open line phone system. The phones do not look as nice as the SV 8100 line of phones, but the price is very competitive. No certification is needed for the SL1100.

The SL 1100 is a completely different animal versus the DSX.

Programming is completely different and models somewhat after the SV 8100.

When it first came out there was a certification on line which to me was a little raw and confusing,i did go thru it.

The best way is get registered with NTAC site and poke around on the site, which will answer many of your questions.

Is it the path to take ? That question would have to be judged
by the Installer using it. NEC should be around for awhile, so
That is one favor for the person getting involved.

Good luck with the SL 1100.

Is the DSX leaving?

Do the 22 button phones from the DSX line compatible with the SL1100? Are SL1100 and SV8100 phones compatible with each other?

What is the progression of the NEC product line? DSX - SL1100 - SV8100?

Thanks.

Nothing official has been said about discontinuing the DSX but there seems to be hints, the number 1 hint is pricing, dealer price is lower on the SL1100.

Phones for the DSX, SL1100 and SV8100 will not work with the other models.

Software comparison between the DSX and SL1100 the SL1100 is by far more powerful it does model after the SV8100.

No question with us if the SL1100 remains at a lower dealer cost we will continue to sell it over the DSX

As of now the DSX and SL1100 are the low end models, the SV8100 is next in line, then the SV8300 and the top dog is the SV8500

The supplier whom I purchase my DSX gear told me today that they have heard as well that DSX will be going by the wayside.....but they haven't been given a date yet.

It wouldn't surprise me. The DSX has been around for quite some time.

Its too bad. I really love this system. Fits the SMB market well, and it is so simple to setup and very flexible.

I like it too, but it's too simple. Too many wannabes sell them, do a sloppy install, then I get the call to clean up their mess. The fact the SL is more complicated works for me just fine.

Thanks for all the info. Guess I'll start learning the SL1100.

I've installed NEC DSX-40 since 2006, nine years. Contacted NEC and they said SL 1100 now. SL 1100 replacing DSX-40. I will have to get up-to-date with the SL 1100 too ? The systems are totally different. Have to learn the SL 1100. Studying it so far, you can see why NEC wants to go with the SL 1100. It's more up-to-date. Have to learn not only a totally different phone system in SL 1100 but have to learn the new voice mail from NEC too, the InMail, instead of the Intramail I know on the DSX-40 and DSX-80. Sometimes, I have customers with 2 sites, and honestly, it's pretty nice to intercom between them. Has anyone done that on the SL 1100 yet ? I am confused too about the new 12 and 24 button phones on SL 1100 compared to the 22-button on old DSX-40 ? I have a lot to learn. But, like you say, when it's $ 100 less for the new SL 1100 package compared to the old DSX-40, it is clear NEC wants me to install SL 1100. They have a seminar I'm going to on SL 1100. I don't guess they do seminars on the 9-year old DSX-40 anymore ? This is a good topic for me. Thank you for all your discussion here. The hard disk drive in the DSX-40 has always been a concern in that 9-year old design. What does the SL 1100 have ? All Flash Memory, like everyone else now ?

The DSX 40 has a hard drive ? That's news to me .

IntraMail and InMail are basically the same thing.
There are no disk drives in either system.
