Hi guys I need some help. I need the command in Linux that will allow me to take screenshots and put them into a file. I tried using the terminal function but I had no luck. I have never taken a command line Linux course before and the instructor wants me to do some tasks that I am totally clueless about. When I told him about my problem he told me to look it up online. I have tried for a week and did not get any where. I do not understand what I am reading.

If you're in a console-only (usually the "server" versions are like this, no GUI) then you can only simply copy/paste into a file.

If you're in the GUI like with Ubuntu Desktop (or really any other), just use the print screen key on your keyboard, this should put it on the clipboard and then just paste it into the paint program. This works in Windows too.
