My Vertical SBX-ip calls for one to one NAT translation for voip connection. Im dumb as dirt about voip, but I'm trying to understand enough to tell any IT person what to do. I just want a voip phone off prem. When I look at 1 to 1 nat, it looks like I still need a seperate static IP at my SBX. and the 1 to 1 nat would just process it through the router. Just the answer to that would be great. If someone could tell me of a book for dumb people on nat 1 to 1 that would help also. Thanks for any replies

I think you pretty much understand it. Simply put, a 1 to 1 NAT would be an static "outside" internet IP address to would be directed, port-to-port to the internal IP address (192.168.1.1, etc) of the SBX.

Say, Ted, quick question for you... Are you wanting to use that phone in a 'road warrior' scenario, or will it be sitting on a desk somewhere never getting moved?

If it's the latter, and you can have a computer at that location, consider setting up a VPN (I suggest OpenVPN, as it is open source with commercial offerings as well) to tunnel your SIP straight into the internal network. You have more overhead, but depending on the codecs you use, and the link speed at both ends, you should be able to get a pretty decent quality call.

Thanks for the replies. It would be set up at a home location on a desk. the customer's up in the air about the cost. I have a bench SBX but no voip card in it. I may order one just to see if I can make it work. Thanks again for the replies.

I had some remote phones running through a hardware vpn on a SBX IP320

You might be able to simply set up port forwards on the corporate router and not worry about the VPN. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the SBX uses SIP, so a VPN would not be needed.

Port forwarding does not work on the SBX remote apps....definitely requires one to one NAT.
