1) I bought a red 2565 a while back on ebay. The faceplate was horrible, looked like someone had dipped it in a bucket of red paint. So I took a beige faceplate from another set I had, but I'd like it to be authentic, mostly because red 2565's seem to be pretty hard to come by. I always thought the faceplates were grey, but someone told me the red 2565's had red faceplates.

2) My next project: MOH. I have an ITT 601A KSU. MOH cards come up on Ebay every 3 months or so, I bid on one last week but got beaten out.

Thanks -
Matt

Matt, It's been a WHILE since I touched a 601, but I don't remember any provision for a MOH card in the 601 chassis. The ITT 403 (?) MOH card and I think all the other brands, won't just slot into a 400 card slot! I'm going to have to dig around for my 601 practice. But, I think you are going to have to lay your hands on an auxillary card box. And you are asking for more than the 601 power supply can provide, so you'd better get an auxillary power supply while you are at it. Hindsight being what it is, too bad you didn't start with a 501! About twice as tall and twice as wide, but the power supply will support a LOT more than you can reasonably put in the cabinet! And, of course, you'd have the standard space consuming MDF, rather than landing the cables in the cabinet. I think the last time I touched a 601 was when I lived in KC! Left there in '89. John C. John -

Thanks! There's definetely a slot for a MOH card.... I see you've seen my intercom ordeal (thanks for the cap. tips); I've just about got the manual in memory as a result. It's just below the last line card slot, and just above the intercom slot. An aux MOH box would be fine as well; as that's the direction I went with the intercom, might as well have a family. Plus this would give me a great reason to put up some cross connetcs (I currently terminate everything inside the KSU). I think I agree about the 501 vs. 601; at the time I bought it all I knew was I wanted a 5625 in which I could make the lamps light/wink; didn't know a thing about KSUs, or even that they existed at all. That was 2-3 years ago, over the last few weeks my interest in the system has peaked again. I'm not too concerned about the power supply - the sad truth is I live alone, the only time more than 1 line is in use is when I'm on one line and someone calls on the other (actually now that I think about it, this is the reason my interest in the system peaked again - I started telecommuting from work, and added a second CO line). Of course I have no idea what is drawing current even when all the phones are on hook and idle.

You lived in KC? Nothing much has changed. A few new buildings downtown, more suburban sprawl in Overland Park and Lee's Summit; just about the only thing that has changed (for the worst, IMO) is everyone now seems to want to pretend KC is equivelant to NY or LA, or even Dallas or Minneapolis. ALOT of pretentiousness, IMO. People just don't seem to understand that no matter how many Starbucks or Nieman Marcuses they put in... they are STILL IN KANSAS. (Missouri if they are lucky/intelligent). smile

Anyway, if you want a laugh (or cry) tune in at 12 CDT to watch the Chiefs get their a***** handed to 'em, once again!

I'll PM you about old home week. To the MOH card, are you looking for a 403? I think I've got 1 around here somewhere. John C. (Not Garand)

Yep, looking for a 403. At keast the manual lists it as: 000403-00A.

Thanks a lot - let me know what you want for it (assuming you can find it) - I know for a fact you can get at least $31 on ebay for it (That's the bid that beat me out).

Thx

i know ma bell used to paint a lot of her faceplates too but if you want one done well find out who installs the taxi phones at your local mall and give em a call thats what i did to get a red 500

I have had success with a careful application of Krylon spray paint.

If the phone is an original Western Electric 2565, the original faceplate was transparent, and rear-painted. Western Electric TT phones were designed so that the faceplate was a contrasting shade versus the housing color. Other makes used the same color for the plate and housing. The housing is Cherry Red, color suffix -53, and the faceplate is Muted Red, color suffix -69. If it is a later WE or other make, the faceplate was either molded in color all the way through, or painted.

Hey all -

Thanks for the tips. I guess I could try to paint it myself, or have it painted; but the real problem is I stole the faceplate from an ITT set.... not at all the same "style" as what's on a WE. I'm pretty sure even if it had a very good paint job I wouldn't be happy with it. As for the make/model/year, All I know is it has a date stamp of 5/73 on it, model 2565 HK.

Here's a couple images:

Thanks all!

PS:

If you havn't been following my intercom thread - take a look at the pic of the front of the set and see if you can tell what's wrong with it (besides the faceplate).

I know that I have some charcoal face plates for this set with the Bell logo on them if that will help.
Posted By: Matt1964 Re: Wanted: (2) 1A2 items - 09/24/07 04:05 PM
Sure - that would be a big improvement. Anything with a bell logo or WE on it is OK by me. Plus I think the charcoal would look better than beige.

If you asked me 20 years ago if I thought I would one day be trying to color coordinate phones.... well, you know the rest.

Sorry to go off topic, but since we are examining my red 2565, can anyone tell me what this gizmo is?

Matt:

That's an Edwards buzzer that was used until the smaller 8-type round buzzers were introduced in the early 1970's.

Bob Wins the prize!

Thanks Ed - Maybe I'll hook it up and see if it buzzes differently. I guess Mr. Edwards probably made it run on 105v though, in which case I won't mess with it.

Matt -

There were 105V AC buzzers. We used to put them in at jobs that wanted some of the intercom stations to ring the bells in the sets. Actually now that I think of it we also put in some 20v Bells. I think it depended on what was available in the supply house. As I recall, the square Edwards buzzers ran on a variety of voltages.

Ah. Well I guess that explains how a pre 1970 buzzer made it's way into a post 1970 phone.

I think I'll leave it there, but not mess with it. Next thing ya know I'll burn up my intercom; and I REALLY don't want to go there.

Where did the 105 volts come from?
Posted By: Arthur P. Bloom Re: Wanted: (2) 1A2 items - 09/24/07 08:10 PM
It's a universal buzzer (either AC or DC) depending on where you put the wires.

It will work on 10 VAC, just like the more recent round ones with the blue leads.

The screw with the spring is the volume adjustment.

They never were equipped with 105-volt buzzers.
Posted By: jeffmoss26 Re: Wanted: (2) 1A2 items - 09/24/07 08:17 PM
What I am wondering is, does the power come from an external supply? Or from the KSU?

Huh? SE-8A B and X were 10/18/105 VAC buzzers.
I think I have a couple of each lying around.

My KSU (an ITT 601) has 105v available on it, I think from the power supply, but perhaps the ring generator. I'm not sure if that was the case on whatever KSU this was hooked to back in the 70's.

Of course, almost all of my 1A2 knowledge can be found in 1 thread on this site. That, and the manual I've practically memorized.

The ring generator mounts on the power supply of a 601. IIRC it fit over the heat sink and there is a white molex type connector to the right of the transformer. I have the power supply but not the ring generator that I can find.

Yep, big old thing, reminds me of a flyback transformer from a TV set. I've a spare one of those.

Is the faceplate close to this color?

It doesn't matter; just curious. It's a bad pic, cell phone cam is all I have.

No, it's much darker as in charcoal color to contrast with a black set.

OK, thats cool too. Red/charcoal would be good.

The thing with a Molex connector is a Big Ol' Capacitor. Took 2 cycles of 60 htz to charge it up, then it discharged. Gloriosky Zero, 30 Htz ringing. Ran the bells and hi-voltage buzzers in 1A2 phones just fine. That's what all the 1A2 power supplies put out. There is/was a 20 Htz ring generator available from the same people that made the 8100 24/48 DC power supply. They made a 20 Htz and a 30 Htz ring generator in the same size/shape case. And, where did the expression "Gloriosky Zero" come from? 1st right answer gets............. a free Mitel 9110-110-000 station card, but you gotta pay the shipping. I'll ship 2 in case there are any bad ports. Heck of a deal. Whatdaya mean, sneaky way to get rid of my trash! smile John C. (Not Garand)

I cheated and searched this forum:

Use a cheap alarm clock that starts blinking with a power loss, to confirm power loss. Plug into the same outlet, set the time and when the NT has the wrong time, if the alarm clock is blinking, which it should be, Gloriosky, Zero!

Still don't know what it means though.

Also don't know what a Mitel 9110-110-000 is, so my entry doesn't count.

Now that I think about it, I should have just kept my mouth shut.

Too late, I already hit send. Sorry!

So, where do I send the 9110-110-000 cards? Matt, FYI they are 8 port single line cards for analog SX100/SX200 PBX's. Analog 100/200's have been out of production for 15-20 years, not supported by Mitel for 10+ years. But there are probably at least 1000 still in use in motels across the U.S. Now you know how Mitel wound up with 80% of the hospitality market! Their equipment is like the energizer bunny!
