Hey guys
I have been asked to extend a DS3 circuit about 100' and I am afraid I do not know the cable needed or the connectors needed. Any help you may have is greatly needed, as I told the customer we could do it, when he said it was a CAT 5 cable, but now I see that it is not, and we losing time on it.

Daniel,
It is going to be 2 coax cables, one for send and one for receive. Check with your suppliers for 734 or 735A cable. The difference is the gauge of the center conductor. They use BNC's on each end. They have to be sized appropriately for the particular cable.

Hope this helps!

Well it depends. Around here a lot of DS3 circuits are actually fiber taken to a multiplexer (someone correct me if that's not what it is) that then breaks it out into coax. Similar to a smart-jack for T1's.

So, you need to look at what you are extending.

Chances are if they want it moved 100' then they want the multiplexer moved and the fiber extended to it. I'm guessing they are moving offices or the IT/Phone room.

Dan:

I have the cable and connectors in-stock if you need them. They were left over from a job we did a few months ago. It's a LOT cheaper to buy this way than to buy full reels of that 734 cable. It's insanely expensive. Send me a PM if you are interested.

The 735 cable was for short runs (<300', I think). The 734 was for longer runs, and yes, it was a fortune.

An OC-3 Mux, takes fiber in and breaks it out into 3 @ DS-3 circuits on coax. An OC-48 does the same thing with 48 DS-3 circuits, etc.
