I just ran into an interesting dilemma today. I have a DS3 on the 1st floor that needs to be extended to the 2nd floor via two 734 cables. I have NO usable path between the two electrical closets due to the layout of the building and the existing path goes through a secure tenant (paperwork, approval, paperwork, approval, paperwork...). Long story short, it will be very inconvenient for everyone if we have to run these cables. The only cable I have is the existing 100-pair between the two closets (less than 300'). Is there any kind of multiplexer for these kinds of situations? I need to get 45mb(DS3) through the feed cable. Possible? Even if it's a $1,000 piece of equipment, it will be less costly than running cable.

Just run the cable and check the LBO, I'm sure you'll need to increase it. Are you talking about DS1 multiplexers or DS3? with DS3 you'll still need to run the coax. And you'll find them to be prohibitively expensive.

If I understand your question correctly: it looks like you want to demux the incoming DS3 into 28 T1s, run the T1s for 300 feet over your existing 100 pair, and then mux them back into a single DS3.

I looked at a similar situation a while back and while we ended up going a different route, here is what I found. Please keep in mind that I never actually attempted this, so treat this info as a starting point for further research.

I believe a Carrier Access Wide Bank 28 can do what you are looking for. If you are willing to risk eBay, they can now be found for under $400 each with the necessary cards installed.

That being said I can think of a few reasons you might not want to do this: First of all, for your price range you are stuck with used equipment. That means no tech support from the manufacturer, troubleshooting without knowing for sure that you actually have working equipment, and the possibility of getting equipment with the configuration locked behind an unknown password.

Second, I don't know how much success you are going to have running 28 T1s together on a single 100 pair. There are a lot of experienced T1 guys on this board, I'd gather some feedback from them before trying this.

A utility for one of the tenants is involved here! Get all parties involved and work out a plan and cost. Inconvenient means money so QYB. Your customer is putting in a DS3 so they can afford it!

Cost is not a problem. We're just looking at alternatives. However, if there is no alternative, we'll run the cables. This is good information regardless.
