An alarm/camera installer friend of mine told me tonight that Cat 6 usable distance was cut nearly in half by running it through metal conduit. He thought he had read this in some manufacturer documentation somewhere. I told him I had never heard of that, in my almost 20 years in the industry. Am I wrong? Is there anything close to what he's saying that could have been misunderstood?

Thanks!

Justin
I'm with you. I've never heard of that. The EIA/TIA Structured wiring specs do not allow exposed wiring, so many jobs use conduit. I used it often and never had a problem.

That's a batch of BS. Plan and simple.

There is nothing remotely close to what he is saying that can be mistaken for his claim.

I just finished a 17 IP camera install using Cat 6 in conduit and the longest run was around 250 feet. Still had a nice 1G of speed on it.
