If you're talking about metal studs, then for sure...

And it's not just Jersey. Did you also know that if the space above is an air handling space you can't use plastic "grommets"? We use 1/2" die cast chase nipples. Just drop them in the 7/8" hole you just made with a hole saw.

I should have known that but it never came up. doh!

I wonder if the make plenum rated comments? Need to see if they do.

I don't think 1/2 inch nipples would be big enough. I like at least a 1" inch nipple. The bigger the nipple the better! I guess it's a personal preference. smile

Don't forget plenum ty wraps and the NJ low voltage exemption certificate.

We're talking steel studs here.

Hal, has there ever been a situation where you needed to install your cable closer to a wall due to, say, plumbing than 1-1/4"?

I don't trust drywall installers.

Not saying it couldn't happen but I've never seen the need for nail plates with steel studs. The 1-1/4" rule still applies but there is always a way to easily re-route a cable to avoid those situations where you can't maintain it.

If you need those things you're talking about, and can't find them under "grommet" that's because they aren't grommets. They're bushings.

That's why I put grommets in quotes.

I use Arlington brand snap-in bushings on the top of studs, inside panels, etc. 1/2 or 3/4 inch most commonly found at the supply houses. Have also used the red stud bushings to go between stud bays.

I use these whenever pulling cable through metal studs

I like to use these when I have to enter or exit drywall when a box isn't required and it's about a drop ceiling.

These are all called gromments too
