Who will gobble them up- Nortel or Cisco?

I don't think either one would be a good fit.

Nortel has had its own financial problems. Can they afford to swallow Avaya? There would be product overlap and it has been suggested that Nortel would have to cut 11 to 18 percent of Avaya's workforce for the combined company to make a profit by 2008.

Cisco has no experience with traditional telephone systems and a buyout of Avaya means that they would then have to support the Merlin Magix (for a few more years) and the Partner ACS.

I don't believe that Cisco's workers are organized. A percentage of Avaya's workforce are members of the C.W.A. Would Cisco want to have any involvement with a labor union?

Silver Lake Partners (a private equity firm based in California) is also talking to Avaya about a buyout.

Maybe Avaya can just fade into the wind. If we are all lucky. smile

This doesn't meet the criteria for Telecom News, have another thread on the possible Avaya buyout here .
