We have a bunch of 8662 handsets that we purchased back in the days of the Inter Tel 7000. The kit has since been discontinued and we are left with the remaining handsets.

Is it possible to change the firmware on the handsets from the 7000 firmware to 5000 firmware?

If so instructions on how to do so would be very helpful.

I have 0 experience on the Inter-tel 7000 but have you tried using the 8662 phones on the 5000 and they didn't work or are you just asking before you give it a shot?

Reading the press releases (again, no experience here), it looks like the 7000 was touted as the end-all SIP connectivity system.

The handsets as they are running SIP could be probably hooked up via SIP to the 5000, although flashing them with the Axxess VoIP firmware would probably give you slightly more features. The different firmwares ships on the installer CD-ROM, at least it did in the Axxess days.. You use the Inter-Tel Flash upgrade util to change out firmware on any component.

You can change the firmware to the classic Inter-Tel version but you will need to get the 2 .bin files.

1. Fire up a tftp server and point it to the folder that contains the 2 bin files.
2. In that same folder add a text file called globalcfg.cfg. Add these lines:

# The IP of the TFTP server.
tftp_url: "IP of TFTP Server"

# Phones will pull this config file every 28800 seconds
update_interval: 28800

#This is the V2 IP Phone Image Pulled from the PBX
itphone_image_ver: 2.2.05
itphone_image_url: "IP of TFTP Server"/itphone_2_2_05.bin

#This is the V2 IP Phone Boot Image Pulled From the PBX
itphone_boot_ver: 2.2.01
itphone_boot_url: "IP of TFTP Server"/itphone_2_2_01_boot.bin

You need to be sure the version number of the two .bin files and the name of the files matches this text file EXACTLY. The IP values do not have quotes around them.

3. Save the globalcfg.cfg file.
4. Boot a fone while holding the 7&8 keys until you see a menu, then release the keys. Navigate to the TFTP Server and enter yer TFTP server then save and reboot.
5. The fone should download the big .bin file, update itself and reboot then download the boot.bin file update and reboot again.
