Got a call from a medical practice a couple weeks ago. They have an Allworx 6x at site A with a handful of phones on premise. It has software V7.xx. They also have 3 or 4 phones at site B 20 miles away with a VPN connecting the 2 sites. The issue is the remote phones are experiencing dropped calls and 1 way audio.
Now, even though I am certified on the Allworx, I haven't worked on them in quite a spell. Two things stood out when I peeked at the programming. First, the server was set up as a DHCP server. This puts it at conflict with the router, which is serving the same function. Second, there was no port forwarding set up on the router. Their IT guy has since changed this on their Sonicwall router. I did not remove the 6x as a DHCP server as this was only a drive by/consultation. The last email I received from the practice says the problem still exists. Any ideas?

Ron

I have a few suggestions that I would try first.

I would ask that you have the it guy at the company set up the port forwarding so that all of the ports are forwarded to the allworx. If you go to the configuration page of the allworx it tells you that have to have certain ports forwarded. Next you should change the way the remote phones are connecting. In the network settings of the phone you want to edit the boot server ip and give it the public ip address. You also want to input the remote plug and play key which is in the voip server link on the allworx page. I would also recommend that you remove the allworx as the dhcp server if the network is already using a router or something is issuing the ip addresses.

Thanks for the input. I do not know how the remote phones are setup entirely, so that can be an issue. A question for you would be that since these phones are on a VPN, is the port forwarding necessary?. I'm guessing it is, at least from what I remember from the course. I seem to remember from when I set up my stepson's Allworx down in Florida, I did have forwarding set up even though it was on a VPN.

Agreed with Joseph. Run the phones outside of the VPN. You will need to set each remote handset in a handset profile of its own in order to separate ports. Allworx has a Doc on how to set multi remote handsets.
