Hello.

I am new to Merlin and Avaya. I have found these boards to be a great help. I am confused on several items.

1. It seems like Avaya's web site will only let you download the patches for win SPM. Unless I have at least Win SPM R2 I can not use Avaya's site. Where can I get a full verison of Win SPM or at least R2.? Maybe I am missing something?

2. What is the correct cable to use from my laptop to the Admin or SMDR port on my switch?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do search in this forum on SPM and 355AF

No disrespect intended but I have searched the forums and still have these questions.

Could you provide the answers?

Thanks. But this does not really answer my question. Let me rephrase.

I would like to buy a premade cable that has the correct ends on it already. The information you provided is great but requires me to manufacture a cable. Buying an adapter would be ok but then what type of cable is in between?

Second please see below. These items are straight from Avaya's website. Avaya according to their own site does not have a full version available for download. What am I missing?

"WinSPM R3.0 Update, Build 2170. In order to use this update, you MUST have WinSPM R3 loaded on your PC."

"This is WinSPM R4.0. This is a zip file that will have to be decompressed before executed. You must have WinSPM R3.0 to use this upgrade. This release will support Merlin MAGIX 1.5 and previous releases of Merlin MAGIX and Merlin Legend."

"This is WinSPM R5.0. This is self-extracting zip file that will have to be decompressed before executed. You MUST have WinSPM R4.0 Build 6150 to use this upgrade!! This release will support Merlin MAGIX 2.0 and previous releases of Merlin MAGIX and Merlin Legend. You will need to upgrade from WinSPM R4 to WinSPM R5 in order to convert files from Merlin MAGIX R1-1R1.5 to R2.0, and to upgrade Merlin Legend systems to Merlin MAGIX R2.0. WinSPM is also compatible with Windows 2000. This file does not include Label MAGIX or some other packages that tell you about future product intentions. These packages are included on the CD that is available from the CIC."

Call your avaya supplier/dealer. Tell him or her you want to buy WinSPM and a 355AF adapter and you will have both.

you will also need a straight through 8 conductor cord (a cat 5 patch cord will do) and most likely you will also need a DB25 to DB9 adapter unless you computer has a DB25 serial port.

Thanks for the new infroamtion.

I would really like to hear from gkar. He mentioned in a post about a full version of WIN SPM available for download from Avaya.

Saving a couple of pennies would be preferable right now.

for cable you need db 9 to db 25 then you will need 355a or 355af ( female) then a 8 condector cord pluged in the admin port.
I have not heard of anybody being able to down load winspm ( not when avaya charges for it )

yzark40 thanks.

I figured that i would dhave to pay but it seemed from these forums that some people were able to provide it to others or point them to a download site that had a full version.

The Avaya web site does say that the versions are patches. BUT, look at the file size. 3,4,5 are all full versions that will work and you could patch up to a later release for file converts. This has been mentioned many times on this site.

Yes avaya's site does have a full version but the way you put it in your posts that was not clear.

Thanks go to wholeflatther who posted the following last year:
"No need to pay . Avaya has what you need already on their public website.
Start by downloading winspm2.exe from ftp://ftp.avaya.com/incoming/Up1cku9/tsoweb/legend/ . It will error out (i.e., "insert disk 2"), but if you save what it installed, you'll be able to upgrade it to whatever version you like with the "patches" on that site. Apply all patches in proper order to achieve the version you need."

This is a great site.
