Has anyone had an IP office500 burn up a TS21 buttset or a 77hp toner?

Gene, aside from about 240 volts maintained contact with these devices, I doubt that it was the IPO. As sad of an answer at mine is, I think that these failures are just a coincidence. Both tools are designed to be much more tolerant to occasional higher-than-normal voltages. Some long-loop CO line voltages from the CO can easily exceed 72 volts. Any test equipment should be able to sustain such levels.

Thanks for the comeback Ed, I thought so, but on the toner it was fairly new and got extremely hot.

I don't think the 77 toner is designed for sustained AC volts. I remember once using it to tone 110AC and it didn't like it much.

I fried a couple toners using them to tone ac lines they can handle ring voltage but not 120vac

Keep in mind, the current on phone lines is limited to, guessing here, 1/2 amp. And that current is coming thru 22-24 gauge wire. (little wire, little current). 120VAC pretty much always can provide 20 Amps, 40 times as much current! And be coming to you courtesy of 12-14 gauge wire. (big wire, big current) The volts will bite in either case, (Defy you to tell the difference between 90 and 120 volts AC when you're doin' the joltage jump! smile ) In any case, you'll definitely blow up your '77' by putting it across 120VAC. In fact, if you sniff carefully, you'll probably detect the acrid odor of electronic oops. You may even hear the 'snap, crackle, pop' of destruction! Keepin mind that the little IC in there is rated for 18 volts or so. The components around it can protect it for a short (no pun intended) time, but constant 120VAC is gonna cook those little components (acrid electronic oops) and then the little IC is gonna go (YUP) 'snap, crackle, and sometimes for extra excitement, a BIG, POP! So, be kind to your work partners and they'll help you out of some tight situations. Or, be prepared to provide extra support to PE. John C.

By the way, Buttsets are in the same category. 120VAC is not the diet they are supposed to be on. They can take a little more abuse, butt smile do you want to risk it? Blow them both up at the same time and you're spending $125-$175! Really screws up the beer fund! John C.

Hey Guys , Who said I was toning 120A.C.,The toner burnt on an older IP Office ,Toning Digital stations. The Buttset burnt on a new IP500 a CG had installed and called me for help, because He couldn't ID the CO's he was using the old partner patch cords, and since, I have figured He was using a CO for a paging
pac,and had the pac over a CO.But really Guys I'm not dumb enough to put my buttset on ROMAX.I should have been smart enough to notice what he had done instead of immediately IDing CO's on his old 66.

Just to poke fun, its Romex. :db:

I haven't had IPOffice fry my toner, but have had toner reboot the IPOffice (200+ phones, middle of the day) when used on digital station port. Won't do THAT again.
