Hello,

I am trying to get the e-Mail feature of my Partner Messaging R7 working. I'm using a networked Win 2000 machine with the Unified
Messaging program installed and apparently working. The "unify with e- mail" box is checked on the mailbox extension I'm testing, and the
digitized message immediately shows up in the "holding" folder, but
nothing else happens.

I have a generic no-auth SMTP forwarding account set up, but the e- mail header seems to be invalid. For example, it says "[email protected]@smtp.com". The folks at the forwarding service tell me the last "@smtp.com" just won't work, but I'm not even certain the message is leaving my computer.

Does anyone have a step-by-step setup instruction for using SMTP with the R7 Messaging? I'm reasonably sure the problem is with the domain
and mail server entries...I don't know enough about what I'm doing to understand what *really* needs to go in these boxes. So far, I've spent
about 5 days tinkering with this setup, and have tried about every combination I can think of.

Any help is appreciated!
Well, I'm no computer geek but I believe you need to have an email server application like Microsoft Exchange running on the machine or on another.

How to Install Unified Messaging in Exchnage 2000 Enviornment

Unified Messaging Troubleshooting
Thanks guys. I don't know very much about MS Exchange other than it has to be installed on a server/domain controller, which I don't presently have, but if I read the Unified Messaging Instructions correctly, the system also works on an outgoing-only basis using SMTP. I'm sure it's something simple....(I finally got Outcalling to work properly after reading some other posts....turns out you must enter a "9" and several pauses in the numerical stream. Not properly explained in the documentation!)
Forgot to mention this: I have seen the following message on start-up in the umslog.csv file:

ERROR 2 [1220] 9/20/2007 11:01:46 CreateMsgService() failed.

Other than this, the system seems to be trying to work; I see messages indicating the e-mail message is attempting to send itself.

Here's a copy of the umslog.csv from 9/20/07:

Sorry for the duplication. There is a section "Using the Unified Messaging Application with an SMTP Server" starting on page 20 of the Unified Messaging Application Installation and Configuration Guide that should be useful. I haven't setup Partner Messaging with an SMTP server and so I hope that this information published by Avaya is correct and helps.

This guide can be found at https://support.avaya.com by clicking on "Installation, Migrations, Upgrades and Configurations" then clicking on "PARTNER® Messaging" then clicking on "Unified Messaging Application Installation and Configuration Guide" and finally clicking on the file type that you want: PDF or ZIP.

Good luck and please let us know how this works out. Thank you.

You need to get the name or IP address of the SMTP server in use at the office where you are installing the Partner system. The easiest way to do this is to look at the email program on a computer there and see what SMTP server it is using. You can also see there whether the SMTP server requires authentication. If it does, write down the authentication information. If the password is hidden, you need to ask someone for it.
If you want to get fancy, you can also use the "nslookup" command to find their MX (mail server) record on the Internet. Of course this won't give you any authentication information. But you may not need it, and you can do this without bothering anyone.
