The last 2 DX120 cabinets I've sent to King Technologies for warranty repair have come back stamped unrepairable.

In both cases I've sent the cabinets to Telmar Technologies in Tampa and they've been repaired. I have no idea why this seems to be happening now but I'm not particularly happy.

Ask Vertical where to send the repair bill since their agent apparently didn't deliver the warranty support.

I've had trouble with King also.

That will go a long ways. I'm starting to wonder if it's King or Vertical not having the money for all the warranty repairs?

From a legal standpoint how can they deny warranty claims as unrepairable when obviously this isn't true? If it's not repairable and it's under warranty then shouldn't it be replaced by like kind unless the damage was an act of God?

I don't care that much because it costs little to repair but it's the principal of the matter.

Bill..if you get a second can you PM me how much Telmar is charging for the repairs? Any contact info would be awesome also.

Burnt boards may be repairable but Vertical deems burnt components or boards surge damaged regardless of the cause voiding the warr. If a company has a contract with a mfg they have to use their standards for product repair both in and out of warr as most contracts will state for contract warr centers. The burnt through board could cause problems unless all the carbon is scraped or cut out and if it is burnt through the board after removing the carbon there is nothing left to resolder the components. Lots of things can be done but don't hold someone to task for upholding a mfg requirements. If you want to save your systems when they start to fail with weird problems check your system voltages and send it in for repair if your 5vdc is flakey if left unchecked it could burn up the 3 diodes that cause so many dx120 system to be deemed unrepairable by the MFG and their contractualy obligated service center.

This isn't the first time with Tecom and faulty diodes. Remember the large quantities of early DX80's with bad zeners on the PS? We finally just repaired them in house. The failures on the 120 are always DZ1-4. I'm assuming poor quality or underspeced zeners too.

I've had many DX120 failures in the exact same spot. It seems only recently they don't want to repair them. I'd buy the surge bit but many fail right out of the clear blue when I know there's been no surge.

In the case of these cabinets there was no charring of the boards themselves, only surface smoke damage.

Of the DX-120 failures I've had you could count the ones with burnt boards on one hand. Most have no visual indications at all. I'll have to check the diodes on the next systems I get in.

Its not the diodes you need to look at if they are burnt its allready to late. The burnt diodes are caused by a failure in the 5vdc circut. You can avoid the problem by checking the 5vdc on every dx120 you touch. Look for swollen caps and any fluctiation in the 5vdc or voltage below 4.9.

So, I'm supposed to go out every day and check all my DX120 cabinets for faulty power supplies?

How about the customer calls us, says the system is dead and this is the problem? We're certainly not in the business of spending our days running around to see if KSU batteries are dead, power supplies are starting to fail, etc.

Regardless of the cause we have no recourse other than just losing another cabinet. They're getting a bit more difficult to find.

I'm looking at a DX120 cabinet with this issue as I type this. There's no evidence whatsoever of swollen caps or anything else. No real point in checking the 5vdc is there, it's already dead.

That is why I said "every dx120 you touch"
There are no more new dx120 cabinets so they are all used when installed. Everyone should check these voltages when they are checking out a system on the bench or when being installed or when at a customer site for any reason. I did not mean to imply you should go to every site just to check them out. Next time your customer complains about weird issues with the display or intermittent co function you need to be checking the voltage as those are both symptoms of a failing power circuit and if left unrepaired can lead to a burnt up unit. This is a FACT. This is good advice meant only to help avoid repeated service calls for weird issues and minimize down time and expense for your customers

Per King Technologies
Due to the decreasing availability of DX120 cabinets King Technologies will immediately offer out of warranty repairs for systems with burnt circuit boards caused by failures in the power circuit.

After the DX80 PS problems we do check cabinets we pull out of service and return to the shop. We also upgrade if needed to F22, test all CO and station ports.

I don't believe we've hardly ever replaced a cabinet in the field because of weird issues. Usually it's either dead or a faulty CO port (low volume). We install ground and battery backups on all systems.

Now, if we are supposed to check every time we're at a customer site then one would think somebody at Vertical might have just mentioned this. Would have saved some hassles.

Regardless, I'm done with this. I have about a dozen cabinets left so we should probably be OK as long as the majority replaced can be repaired.

I sent the one marked "Unrepairable" to Telmar yesterday. We'll see what happens with the latest one.

I do appreciate the offer of out of warranty repair pricing. Thank You.
