Hi, looked over moving an old Nortel 8x24 DR5 with around 50 phones, and older startalk. They have autoset relocation on and wondered best path to go. Should we turn off autoset prior to shutdown/move and map out ports, or renumber back to standard numbering layout and reconnect phones, then turn feature back on. Also may have issue with programming getting erased due to age of system, thought of putting UPS and keeping on during move, and/or putting a RAD unit on it and backing up (if it works on older version...). Of course customer doesn't want to upgrade,$$. Looking to avoid as many headaches as possible (probably will be some due to age of system)
Thanks

Definitely take notes "En masse"! Not only the ports & extensions, but all other programming as well. Good luck.

Attaching a UPS may or may not help, depending on the caps. It may default as soon as you unplug anything.

You can get the software replaced to correct the battery issue. The cost is reasonable. If you unplug it and it defaults, the ports will be logical. Relocation is turned off by default, so be sure to reset it if you do want it turned on.

Make sure your customer is aware of the potential risks of moving an old system. Get them to sign a waiver that if it defaults you can reprogram for a fee.

Thanks guys, If I get them to pay or stick it into the move cost for a refurb'd software cartridge (new capacitors) to eliminate future loss of data, will programming be easily transferred over or will there be problems due to years of them moving phones around with autoset relocation or will I need to start from scratch...

personally i'd start from scratch... never takes me more than about 30 mins on these and then you know for sure what you're workin with.

93mdk93 is right about that.

I will say this. If you do plan to make the move with a plug and play mentality, make sure you plug in one phone at a time and wait for it to fully come on line before connecting the next set, with auto set turned on. I would probably go this route if the customer does not want to pay for a re-install.

agreed, 50 sets isnt a huge re programming, worst case if it defaults you can have them up and running and program on the fly (not the best i know) I had to move a 8x24 last year in a school and it defaulted on me, they didnt want to buy any new equipment. Got it up and running within an hour.
