I have an 824 at a customer and have the CPC-S 3.0 and CPC-M 3.2 manual. Per the features manual I should be able to:

1. On/Off

2. Prog

3. #2

4. Port No.

to change name on the port.

Manual says to use "Auto" to backspace and "Conf" to switch between numbers and letters.

However "Auto" does not backspace but enters uppercase "A" and "Conf" does not switch cases but enters uppercase "C".

I assume this is a software version problem and do not know how to resolve this. Customer need names at the extensions, so I am trying to resolve this. I understand that Pansonic is no longer supporting 824 so need help on this. Customer does not have money to upgrade system now.

Hmm. I'm not sure about the 824, but on the 72 and 96 you can only perform that feature on port 01 and/or attendant stations. Remember to enter the port number and not the extension number.

Yup, just fired up an 824 cpcs v1.1. You can't get into name programming at all from other than attendant phone. Once you enter the port number (01-24 and you've gotta enter 2 digits), the current name should be displayed and the auto/cong/flash keys will work as expected.
