I'm connecting my laptop to a TVS50 with a null modem cable but I get no response when I power up the TVS50. In HyperTerminal I only have COM1, which gives me a message that something else is already connected to it, and COM2 is where my modem is connected to. How can I get the TVS50 to communicate with my pc? Thanks for any help you can give.

The problem isn't in the TVS 50.
You have to have an available com port or make the proper assignments in your laptop.

Hyperterminal likes to default to the modem. What you have to do is use the drop down menu and pick the Com port you have the TVS50 hooked up to. If you don't know what # the Com Port is go to Control Panel---Administrative tools------Computer Management----Device Manager and double click on Ports. All Connected ports of your computer will show up there. If it is a USB port connected through a USB to Serial Connected to a null modem DB9 this will be very simple because the USB will "pick up" on the connection automatically. If it is a serial port on your laptop make sure the settings are correct. If you are still lost try every com port on your PC except the printer port until you get a connection. Let me know if this helps.

petratech, thanks for the reply. I'm still unable to communicate with the TVS50. In the hyperterminal "Connect using" drop down, my options are: COM1, COM3, my modem, and TCP/IP. Under Device Manager.Ports all I get is COM1 and LPT1. When attempting to connect to COM1 I get the message "Another program is using the select Telephony device". With COM3 I can "connect" but I don't get any response from the VS. In modem properties, my modem is connected to COM3. I disabled my modem and COM3 went away as a selectable option. Very frustrating...

I have seen where a PCMCIA card has caused problems like your having.
That could be what's making COM 1 not available.
If you can connect with Com port3 but get no response from the TVS it may be that someone changed the baud rate on the tvs.
Go ahead and connect with Com 3 and set dip switch 1 in the TVS to on, all the others off or to the left. Reboot the TVS with the laptop connected and hyperterm running.
This will reset the parameters of the TVS to 9600, 8, N and 1
also turn off "flow control"
Don't forget to turn the switch off again.

Another culprit for grabbing com 1 are synchronization software for PDA and other devices. Try shuting down all non relvant software running in the backround.

and the culprit was... the PDA software. As soon as I shut down HotSync, COM1 became available. I connected to the VS and was able to communicate with it. Thank you all for the great support in helping me get through this.
