I've recently inherited the duties of maintaining our KX-TD816 phone system, and the first thing I need to do is to add 4 more extensions. The KX-TD816 is already set up with 2 additional modules (8 extensions, and 4 CO's), and 4 of the added extensions are already in use (for a total of 12 extensions). I've been asked to make the other 4 extensions available, but I'm not sure how to go about doing this - there is a ribbon cable adapter coming out of the 8-extension module, and half of the wires have been stamped out for 4 extensions, but the rest of the wires are just bare. I'm assuming all I need to do is to stamp out the other wires into the extensions, but I don't know which wires to stamp out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

ok the kxtd is the easyest system to add ext to
1 when you look into the ext modual you will see 8 x socketts and run as bottom left (ext 109)to top left ext (112)
bottom right ext(113) top right(116)
on each plug there are 6 x holes
with the glass part face to the left & on the upper side of the plastic holder

the first & last holes are unused
the second & 5th holes are the digi pair it doesent matter which way round if you are useing a digi phone
the 3th & 4th holes are the annalog (single line or slt phone )
or is known on the system as a xdp port

as you can see eack port has 2 exts in it annalog on the inner & digi on the outside of it.
we will need to know what type of phone you are using with these ports but on the older phones these require all 4 wires (annalog & digi )to run
the newer only require 2 digi wires to run

hope this helps a bit

if the modual has an amphnol cable
then you will to krone them down
but the above princable still applies

there are 25 pairs of wires on each cable
each set of 4 wires + 1 ext with the remainder not being used at all
is there a gap in the wireing between each ext ...good question ...the Gem will know for definet....but you can chk by looking at the way it is punched down on the other exts
chk to see if the following are being used

white/white blue used
orange/white orange used
white white green used or not

if it is being used then there wont be anygaps in the rest no need to chk any farther
if not then
white /white brown used or not
but i dont think there are any gaps at all

white/white slate(gray)
red/red blue
red/red orange
red/ red green
red/red brown
red/red slate
black/black blue
black/black orange
black/black green
black/black brown
black/black slate
yellow/y blue
yellow y orange
yellow/ y green
yellow / y brown
yellow /yellow slate
purple/ purple blue
purple/p orange
purple/p green
purple /p brown
purple/p slate

each line above = 1 x pair of wires

thats your lot for now so have fun

Wow, thanks! That's a lot of helpful info.

Right now the white/white blue and white/white orange are in use, but white/white green is not in use.

Do any set of pairs work, or do certain pairs need to go together?

no not any pairs
if the white green is not used then chk the whith/white brown if that is being used then that pair is the annalog pair for the next ext and so the white /white slate is the digi then a gap =red blue
then the red/red orange + red/red green is the next ext
and so on
another way to chk is with a multi meter
high voltage (30v=annalog (12v)=digi
& annalog pair on the amphnol cable is alwas followed by a digi pair then a gap then it starts again if you dont have a m/meter you can use a single line phone with the end stripped off and place this into the punch strip in spaces of 2 moves when it works youve found the annalog pair the next pair wil be the digi the next pair nothing then it will work again

hope you have a good printer and lots of ink

Kmtech, I would hope that all 25 pair of that cable is terminated, (punched) to a M66 block
or maybe a 110 type.
For the last 4 extensions off the KX-TD 170 card
(Exts. 113, 114, 115 & 116) you would be concerned with black/green & black/brown for 113
yellow/blue & yellow/orange for 114, yellow/brown & yellow/slate for 115 and
vilot/orange & vilot/green for 116.
The digital stations really only use 1 pair but it is the 2nd pair in the jack and the line cord. I suggest connecting both pair as the 1st pair of each station is the T-R and supports the analog side of the station should you choose to use the XDP or parallel connect
or even an analog PITS set.
