I have fitted few of them but never had to do it before.

My client who has PANASONIC KX TEA 308 wants to print call logs.
Ideally he would like to send log to his laptop.

First problem is that todays laptops or even desktops dont have RS232(COM)ports.

So I bought one of those cable with RS232 (COM) on one side and USB on the other but neither printer nor laptop connected to printer does not seem to even "notice" presence of system being plugged in. I used relevant commands from the PANASONIC side but printer remains silent.

Has anyone got any idea how to go about it ? .
Some step by step guide would be perfect.

Thanks for all help.
try using terminal on the laptop to check output.

the printer would have to be a seriel printer/dot matricks
Thanks.
When saying "terminal on your laptop" do you mean remote terminal (telnet ?). If so that would require PANASONIC to have IP address and I'm not sure that's a case.

I ordered EPSON serial printer so will see how it works.

Thanks
Not telnet, TERMINAL PROGRAM. Try hypertrm or putty. Read the instructions carefully regarding DB-9 to DB-9 pinouts. Something has to be held high to trick the KSU into sending the data.

OK. Lets tackle problem one step at a time.
System is on the wall and working.
There is Epson serial dot matrix printer plugged to it.

I'm using relevant sequence from manuall:
[PROGRAMM] -> ** -> Manager CODE -> 1201 -> [AUTO ANS]

hoping that my printer will print call log for ext 201.

But nothing happens.

Any advices. Am I missing something.

Thanks
Michal
Just found that my cable is point to point so it may be whole mystery.
I made correct cable but still nothing. frown
I have no clue what "point-to-point" means, but do you have a Pana TVx voice mail system with a DB-9 connector? Run hypertrm and plug the serial cable into the VM system. If it works, you know the cable is good. When you get a working cable (you may have to get a null-modem adapter) then you're not fighting two or three different things.

Cable is OK as already have some success with telnet.
However have changed so many options that not sure yet what is causing which behavior of system. Long night ahead of me to figure that out. Printer still remains silent though.

Thanks for your time and advice.

Maybe someone knows weather it is possible to get call log printout on per CO line basis rather than per Extension, With small system it is OK but with larger one it maybe a pain to print log for every extension and later copy and paste it to word editor.

Wow. When you start a thread, try to keep on topic. If you want to know how to get trunk and extension printouts, don't start with a serial printer, because by its nature, it's a SERIAL device. Hard to get a sorted output.

Every one of my systems, except the ones attached to a Tel Electronics box captures data to a serial PORT on a PC, the TelElectronics has its own box. We have SMDR logger or PhoneLogger attached that captures the data to present it to the web interface where the sorting takes place.

Just because your cable works on telnet, does it need to have pins 2&3 swapped for the Panasonic serial port? There's that null modem adapter I suggested.

Outside of that, just go through the SMDR parameters and make sure all programs are there. You should be able to call for a report and the serial port will play to the PC.

The manual says a rs232c cross cable, PC or Printer. (Null modem).
If your computer has only a USB, need software to emulate Rs232c.
Few work right.
Panasonic has a RS232 driver developed by panasonic. Can be downloaded from many sites.
