I have a customer that is using the free legacy version of Google apps. I cannot get vmail to email working for them because of this. Usually in these situations I use the customers internet service provider(AT&T in this case)and the email account that usually comes with, but their service doesn't supply an email account.

What methods do some of you guys use to get around these issues?

Use Hotmail or Gmail.

I've never tried Hotmail, but free Gmail really? I've never had any luck using Gmail unless the customer had the full paid Google apps with their own domain and an application specific password set up for the vmail. Is there a trick to get the free version to work?
