I recently attended a meeting where the Asterisk system was discussed. It is an open-source voip PBX built on a Linux platform. I am curious to see what the opinions are on this system. It is being presented to us as a better option than a Mitel or Nortel IP PBX system. The presentation sounded good but I am sure there is more to it. Is anyone familiar with this system? Thanks!

There is a rather long thread about installing an Asterisk system in the VIOP secion of the forum - take a look at that. My feelings are that it is a OK system overall, but to be honest it cannot compete with the other systems you mentioned - or most true IP PBX systems for that matter. Others have far more experience at it than I do though.

I would be real careful about going to an Asterisk system for a business telephone system. If you have a Mitel or a Nortel system that has a problem, at least there is a manufacturer to stand behind the product. Asterisk does not have that.
If your phone system is not crucial, then that may not be a problem.

I have to agree with nfcphoneman. If you look at mitel's os, you will see that they use Windriver's VXWorks. They could of themselves used linux, but if you have a problem, it's better to have some professional support, just like all of the people here.

Asterisk does far more then just Voip, other uses for an Asterisk box are auto attendant/voicemail, call routing,IVR, MOH with MP3's, predictive dialer, CTI and many more features plus Voip. https://www.asterisk.org/features Asterisk makes a great addition to a business system but a long ways to go before it will replace them.
