When I look down the list of phone systems on this site, it looks very established manufactures like Avaya Nortel etc, If you install a new voip system like Allworx or say a Hosted IP system, you have to make your post in "other systems"

What does it take to establish new "room's" on this site for up & coming new phone systems?

We do have a VOIP category. In general, our support forum really is for tried and true products. As new ones come along, they may be added. The general consensus here is that there aren't any IP-only systems that have reached that point.

A poll was just conducted to see what brands that the members were servicing. The results of that poll showed that anything excluding CISCO with more then 10% of the members servicing it is represented. Until a product becomes popular enough to the section active it should stay in the Other Systems area.

Results of the poll below

What products do you service ?

Asterisk - Trixbox etc. 4% (4)
Atlas 4% (4)
Avaya - Lucent 62% (58)
Cisco 14% (13)
Comdial 39% (37)
ESI 19% (18)
Executone - Isoetec 12% (11)
Inter-Tel 21% (20)
Iwatsu 10% (9)
Mitel 27% (25)
NEC 38% (36)
Nitsuko - Tie 14% (13)
Nortel 56% (53)
Panasonic 48% (45)
Samsung 26% (24)
Shoretel 3% (3)
Sprint - Tadiran 5% (5)
Telrad 4% (4)
Toshiba 40% (38)
TransTel 3% (3)
Vodavi 31% (29)
Vertical 15% (14)
X Blue 7% (7)
Other 17% (16)
1A2 & Comkey 17% (16)

Looks like even the old 1A2 beat out Allworx and Asterisk by a wide margin. That tell you anything?

It says that Asterisk has 25% of the number of installers as something that has been in use for 30 years. There's two ways to read it.

Actually 1A2 has been in use for closer to 60 years, if you include 1A1 and accept that there are STILL 1A2 systems operating out there! And there are only 17 of us still servicing 1A2 because there aren't that many folks that have a clue how to service them, but they sure can sell 'bells and whistles'! smile John C. (Not Garand)

We had a poll?

Asterisk has enough community resources out there. it doesn't really need it's own forum if you spend a few minutes in google looking for your answers.

This may be a little off topic, but I was wondering how many are out there actually steering their cutomers towards hosted ip solutions?

All I've heard are horror stories. Anyone have something nice to say about this?

I've only seen one customer that went that way. I didn't argue with them since all that we did for them was cabling anyway. After several complete system outages in less than two months, out it came.

People don't consider the fact that if they lose their connection to the service provider, they lose everything internally and externally.

Ed,

The stories I've heard have been from those do-it-yourselfers. You know the ones that try to start up on a shoe string, but find you can't low ball communications. They all seem to get out of their contracts without pentalties. I guess you actually have to provide service to hold them to it smile

I think you're miss reading your data.

To me "Asterisk - Trixbox etc." was misleading. I know I personally sell Allworx but included it in "Other". I whizzed by "Asterisk - Trixbox etc." as I don't do Asterisk and didn't consider it included other IP systems. I wonder how many others thought the same as me and put their IP ware in the "other" category? Had you had a category that read "Pure IP system" and not "Asterisk - Trixbox etc." I think your data would read differently.

Marv you maybe on to something I do not know the brands of Voip that are available so they were not included. The poll got lost in cyber space before it was completed by everyone so I may post another one if I do I will include what ever brands that I know of.

Anyone that has a brand name to include in the next poll let me know and I'll include it next time.

Merritt,

Why not poll like this?
VoIP
Hosted
Hybrid
TDM Digital
Analog
1A2

Then a poll can break it down by manufacturer later.

Hmmmmmmmm......how about that?

Like Marv, I also carry Allworx, which is quickly becoming a force in the marketplace. I missed the poll entirely, so I look forward to a chance to add some input in a more accurate questionnaire. I like Ken's idea.
