With respect I was not being ignorant (slip of the finger putting RG, I do know it stands for registered jack) also for the record there is a considerable difference between ignoring something and being ignorant. I was simply stating that little thought went into the use of the RJ61 standard. The system is supposed to be designed for use in a 19" rack system with structured cabling (for which most if not all use T568a/b it's not just for Ethernet) yet defeats it's self by hanging on to telephony standards. The unit was designed to appeal to the IT managers and seem more like a data switch but then you find you either have to start using spider cables or cable out to punch down blocks and the old 25 pair method was much more efficient for that (I won't bother with the name of that just in case I give cause for you to pull that apart). All I can say about the RJ method they have chosen is that these systems will be in for a long time and what a pain it will be for those who have neatly tied in the cables to terminate on punchdown blocks when the inevitable happens, a clip breaks off a plug in the middle of it all.

On the contrary, a lot of thought went into this decision.

The cable connected to each jack carries four T/R pairs which will be terminated to four destinations (lines or phones), typically on a punch down block. T568A/B cables and jacks are used to provide a one-to-one connection of all four pairs for Ethernet applications.

I have had conversations about this with many of our dealers who said they were glad we made the correct decision to use RJ-61 instead of T568A/B. You are one of the exceptions.

I recommend that any additional discussion about this topic be done on the installers forum.

I do understand that as you speak in the possessive sense "we made the correct decision" you would want to divert negative opinion away from a discussion of the product. Unfortunately it is precisely that, a discussion about the product not installation techniques/methods. Anything I say will not sway your decision on the merits of the RJ connectors just as you won't sway me from the opinion that in an attempt to sway IT professionals with a blade server type appearance, NEC screwed up big style in it's inability to drop telephony standards and move to IT standards. So I will back away from what will obviously deteriorate into a slanging match. This is my last word on this thread.

I don't really understand what R4+Z is even hinting at. NEC is following code. USOC for the TDM voice cards and 568A/B for their VOIP. A HELL of alot better than those damn DDK connectors back in the day. I LIKE the fact you can tail a system out very efficiently this way.

Whilst I would love to answer your question I have committed to saying no more on this subject. If you want to discuss this further in a more private forum, I can be found on the "PBX info" (NEC) forums under the same handle and they offer a private message facility. Fel fre to contact me!

laugh No worries, RZ-4 (or something like that)! Just wanted to make sure people were aware of it.

Can you imagine a TDM switch not using the wiring standard of the 8300 and having about 200+ extensions? the Way the system was designed is great, now if they (NEC) can get their heads together and get rid of all the bugs that' would be nice.
