TigerDirect still builds laptops with XP Pro

I've always been satisfied with equipment from them.

I just got the enterprise edition of Windows 7, 32-bit; it's essentially the same as vista exept you can run Windows XP as a vitual machine (if youre processor can handle it), but I will say it boots faster than XP and Vista and its easier searching for files by typing instead of pointing and clicking. Overall, I'd say big step up from XP user, but if a Vista user, you will adapt quickly to the appearance and layout of the desktop and a few flashy features.

I did however have a problem; my properties were set to have the pc go to sleep when the laptop lid is closed; when I woke up the pc it started freaking out with a black screen and white horizonal lines in the middle, stretched across the screen. I powered it off then rebooted; working fine since.

Of course it boots faster...just wait until you begin adding:
  • Printers
  • Software
  • USB devices
  • Et cetera

My VISTA was faster than XP Pro until the "required additions". wink

I run Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and the only complaint I have is that Cisco doesn't support 64-bit on their POS VPN software. So what I do is run XP on a virtual machine (Sun VirtualBox) and run the crisco crap in there. Other then that it works great so far.

Been testing 7 ultimate 64 with server 2008 R2 and so far, I'm sold on the combo for 2 main reasons:

1. DirectConnect - secure remote connection to the server WITHOUT a VPN which takes care of some major headaches for me

2. If you need to use a VPN anyway, VPN Reconnect, which automatically brings up your VPN if you lose the internet connection. Works nicely.

I didn't have the chance to use BranchCache, which basically caches files from one remote LAN at another LAN, but it sounds interesting. For companies with more than 1 location it should save $$$ and time on internet traffic.

As far as I know these features work only with Win7 Ultimate or Enetrprize AND Windows Server 2008 R2. I doubt Microsoft will make them available to any other desktop or server versions.

I also like the fact that Windows Media Player 12 can load and play my itunes music and video libraries. Didn't have to install quicktime in any Win 7 computer so far. I wonder how Apple feels about that. On the other hand, Media Player 12 will NOT play content copyrighted through the Apple Digital Rights Management but luckily for me I haven't bought or downloaded any of that.

I've been using the RTM version of Win7 Pro 64 bit. It's better than Vista for so many reasons. Definately rec the 64 bit if your gonna install. I had no additional drivers to install, and my printer worked fine after a visit to windows update. After all drivers, accesories and Antivirus were installed, it still booted way faster than a bare XP install.

With Win7 each version adds upon the other instead of different features that are added or removed among versions. Also 64 and 32 bit are on the same DVD, so now there are 3 different versions you can buy instead of 7.

Oh yeah, XP compatibility mode actually works surprisingly well.

I'm not going to install (or leave/use) Vista on anything I own, but so far Win7 has been surprisingly pain free... far less than XP was 9 years ago.
