The super cheap way to handle this is to turn on "File and Print Sharing" on Computer B (even if the machine isn't sharing any resources). Regardless of name, Workgroup and all that bologna, they should be able to see each other afterward. It should be almost nothing to talk your friends into making that happen without going on site.

File and Print Sharing IS on. A can see B and share her resources. F&PS is also on A. I'm truly confused.

I'm with Skip. Never use that disc that comes with a router. If they have cable it should have been plug and play anyway.

Beings it is working from A to B, I would highly doubt a router issue as well. Has to be some sort of firewall/software change on PC A. Maybe the easiest thing would be to have them do a System Restore (built in on XP) to a date before the new router was installed. All user data on PC A will remain intact, but any software/updates/etc that were added will be removed. That may be the easiest thing to try first.

Ffej010 is on the right track. The packets are being blocked by a firewall on the host computer. If you can ping the gateway but not the other host, that means ICMP is being blocked and only a firewall can do this. Either disable Windows firewall or add the network address to the trusted zone of the firewall if it will allow it or add the specific IP of the remote host.

Hallelujah!

Thanks to everyone, especially ffej010 and PMCook.

The problem was that when they changed routers, Norton's (which I didn't know they had) allowed access to the router but blocked access to other computers attached to the router.

I had her add the other computer to the trusted zone and it worked.

That was the easy part. Finding out that she had a firewall was the hard part.

Me: "Do you have a firewall?"
Irene: "I don't think so...."
Me: "Well, let's see what's running on your computer."
Irene: "How do I do that?"

:bang:

Eventually we found Norton's and worked our way through the menus and located the right place and....success!

Thanks again to all.

Sam
