I want to test a T1 ckt the only problem is that both ends terminate on a DSX panel without having a proper test equipment I want to test throughput speed. One side should be bantam tr/rx cable and the other side should plug into my laptop. I would like know what type of wiring scheme I should use on the rj45 end. Straight-through or crossover? in order for my ethernet port to work.

I do not think you can do that, a t1 is not ethernet.

You can't do that. The T1 circuit is not ethernet and will not connect to your laptop in that manner. You'll need to get the proper test equipment to use the bantam jacks.

If the T1 is working properly, there is no need to test for speed because a T1 only has one speed. Now, if you have the proper CSU/DSU and router connected to the T1, you can do a simple speed test using your laptop, or any other PC connected to the network. (Assuming that this is data, not voice.)

If you give some more details, perhaps we can help you troubleshoot your problem. There are some very good T1 experts here. (BTW, I'm not one of them.)

You could use bantam to RJ45 to connect to a CSU/DSU, and connect your laptop to that. If you don't have a bantam to RJ you can wire wrap onto the pins and terminate the other end on an RJ45 using pins 1,2,4 & 5.

You've got to have a router between the DSX & your PC to interpret the T1 signalling, as well as whatever layer 2 protocol you should be seeing.

T1 terminates on a DSX panel on both sides. In the middle cust has OC48, OC192 optical network. I'm just trying to test throughput speed. One other option since I don't have CSU/DSU connect GIG port that's coming out of the optical equipment to Router and test ckt this way. I really wanted to test it through DSX panel but on the other hand how much difference that can be?

I understand your wanting to perform this type of testing at the Optical Carrier patch panels, however, this simply cannot be done. The only way to conduct any type of T1 testing from anywhere within the T1 path, must be accomplished using specific T1 test equipment. Your ethernet connection from your laptop will get you nowhere at the panels, even if you had the correct adapter to the port on the dsx panel. The tests you are wanting to perform must be accomplished from either end of the T1's path. Maybe Majestic can provide some additional input. I'll send him a copy of this thread, to see if he may be able to assist.

Mike, got your message but you hit it right on.

There is simply no way to do what he wants. He will need to convert the T1 signal with a CSU/router then plug into the ethernet port with his notebook/laptop.

The only exception to this is when you are doing ethernet over sonet with OC grade gear (Tellabs/Fuji) that can terminate directly to an ethernet port but that's really only found in higher bandwidth scenarios. (I've done this with Level3/Telcove at 165 Halsey in Newark,NJ)

We wish we could provide you with a solution for convenient ethernet testing within the T1's OC path, but unfortunately ethernet communication and DS1 signaling across an OC Ring are two completely different things. Welcome to this board, and I really wish we had better news regarding this type of testing.

You guys have helped quite a bit. I think getting a CSU/DSU might the way out. It's something customer wanted to test yesterday but I guess they will have to wait !!!

or you can just get the correct test equipment...if you do not use it often you can probally rent one
